listening to the comepetition or your station?

Back when I was still in radio, I and another DJ had a heated discussion over what station to listen to when we are out and about or at home. We were in his car and he was listening to our station and I wanted to tune around the dial and listen to others and his response was that he wanted to know what was going on at our station. I said that he should already KNOW what was going on at our station and I wanted to listen to other stations to see what THEY were up to and ,if necessary, try and counter program something to whatever the other station was doing or respond to it in some way if it seemed like they may gain traction with it. [Since we were both obstinate S.O.B.s they discussion was never really settled]

Those still in the business....do you listen to your station OR tune around the dial to see what the competition is up to? ???

{Some might be friends with people at other stations and they may give a "heads up" to what may be going on at their station but no one ever did that for me, and I wouldn't do it for them because I think it's a little unethical.....but then again, I didn't know too many DJs from other stations}

Competition.
And my friends (from other stations) and I usually just don't mention the job too much. It's a silent understanding.

Back in the day (1976) I was doing AM drive at WXIL-FM in Parkersburg WV. My '72 Plymouth Gold Duster had a real strong radio...I would listen to The Big 1220 WGAR, Super CFL and WLS for bits and ideas. Since the other AM's in Parkersburg weren't very creative and the other FM was running TM Stereo Rock..I didn't pay much attention to them...just the out of market big boys!
