Listening to the survivors

Is it just me, or do any other former battle scarred radio vets listen to Memphis radio and think "here I am on the beach, and that guy's got a gig" ?

Never mind. It is just me.

No, I do that from time to time--and while I don't count as a "recent casualty," it makes it hard to listen to local radio.

But hey, I don't begrudge the folks who have gigs. God's good, and He's got more in store for my family and myself than I can imagine on my best day.

I just wince too much when I listen, particularly when I listen to the station I listen to the most. (Did that make sense?)

Makes to much sense, Mike. Goes triple for Snap!

Well even though I still work at Rock 103 on weekends and sometimes during remotes, the radio industry is really changing the way entertainment breeds. I mean there are times I cant stand hearing myself talk over 45 seconds and thats why I never say much except for twice an hour. The major problem with radio now are some of the greedy corporate executives across the board are cashing in on opportunities left wide open by certain FCC laws and becoming millionaires overnight and pushing all the great talent out the door in some major cities. But hopefully that will change soon. Radio seems to go round in circles before it comes full circle and realizes that it has made a big mistake firing all the good talent.

I've been out 10 years this week - I sometimes miss how it used to be, but even given the opportunity to go back I wouldn't. I've had much better financial success out of the business..and I have much more free time. I think I'll stay on the outside watching...

Ditto, 'Saur.
This whole "not working weekends" 9-5 thing has really turned out lovely.
Leave work Friday afternoon and not go back until Monday morning.
More money...but not more fun.
I'd be lying if I said I didn't miss it and suffer the occasional "Jones", but in reality, I couldn't go back.
I had to turn down the last P/T offer, 'cause it would have been a Saturday midday shift.
I'd have loved to do it...but Saturdays...I play golf at the Country Club.
Sundays won't work, either, because that's the day I rest and hang out with the family. (or play golf)
So, the "Jones" gets a little rub now and then in lively debate on the board.
Outside watching..with no actual investment in how the dramas play out...that's the ticket. ;D

Interesting. Go through the list of guys that got gigs that don't deserve them.

I just have to say I have bit respect for the out of work vets on this board, and the ones that I know personally..They've been through some something I've yet to experience in my infant career. They can tell you a lot and the "old time" radio stories are surprising to hear.

The problem is...how do you take something lower on the ladder once you've been up the ladder?

I saw this played out once, where a person would not (could not?) accept a role we offered so that person could get their foot in the door again.  I know it probably hurts the ego, but if it really is in your blood, don't you find a way?
