LISTENNING TO BOSTON RADIO STATIONS ON A WALKMAN

I was at Heymarket Train Station the other night. Here's what I picked up in that area. Kiss 108 came in excelent, as well as Magic 106.7, 104.1, 105.7, 101.7, 100.7, 93.7, 92.9, 90.?7, 89.7, and 88.9. They all (except 101.7) mormally comes in excelent in Boston and throughout Boston (Downtown, Comm Ave, Northeastern University, Brookline....)

In Heymarket the stations I can not get on a walkman were 103.3, 98.5 had 96.9 and Kiss 108 at the same time, Inside Boston (Comm Ave, Downtown, Southend, Brookline, Roxbury, I can not get 103.3, 98.5, and 93.7 when listenning on a walkman, same when I change the DX

This goes with ANY walkman

Heeeyyyyyyy market. da fonz shops there.... ;D

Checkout the Pirate stations . 87.7 must be clear on heeeeyyy mark .

Paragraph 1. yes, 90.9, and 92.9 I get anywhere inside Boston (Heymarket, Downtown, Chinatown, Comm Ave, Southend, Brookline, Roxbury, Dorchester, Mattapan, Allston, and parts of Brighton

Paragraph 2. The FM stations that I can not get (inside) Boston, in those areas are 97.7, 98.5, 99.5, 101.7, 102.5, and 103.3. and 107.3 I can not get those stations inside Boston.

Now, 93.7 comes in (ok) in East Boston, North End, and Heymarket areas. But the rest of those areas that I just mentioned in the previous paragraph, I can not get 93.7. 93.7 comes in and out in parts of Allston and Brighton, but it does not come in in those parts of Boston (Brookline, Fenway area, Longwood area, and the res of those parts of Boston that I just mentioned.

As I am leaving Boston, I start picking up some of those stations that I mentioned in Paragraph 2. Some not all. 97.7 signal is not good at all, it is ok, but not listenable, especially in East Boston, Revere, and Lynn. I start losing it as I get into Salem.

The bad thing is, 93.7 website has pictures of the State House and ...in Boston, but it does not come in in that part of Boston, near Mass General Hospital, forget it.

Radio management has do work on this, these stations are in Boston, you see all those pirate stations coming on in Dorchester, Mattapan, and Roxbury, some you can get further outside the city (101.3) comes in and out throughout East Boston, but as I'm getting into Revere I start losing that.

I can get most Magor AM stations on some Buses and two trains (Blue and Green Line) except when in a tunnel. I get most of the major ones including 1200am in and outside Boston (Including) Salem-Ma, Revere, Roxbury, and Brighton to name a few

all those are listenning on a walkman, (ANY) walkman, new and old, DX or Local, you can not get (all) Boston FM stations.

yes, 87.7 comes in and out throughout Roxbury, Dorchester, and Mattapan, as well as some parts of Boston. I have not tried Comm ave area or Brighton area. I can however pick up 101.3 in Allston, but it is very static.

the best place I can get 97.7 is Revere to Airport Train Station area. Then, Fields Corner area south, JFK to Braintree, as soon as you start coming into Quincy it comes in perfect.

99.1 doesn't come that good Airport to going north. It starts coming in around Orient Heights, but fades in and out, and I start losing it after Wonderland Train Station in Revere going north. 99.1 does not come in at all in the city of Boston and all those cities that I mentioned, Comm Ave,, Northend, Downtown, Allston, Brighton, Brookline, Roxbury....

Radio management has to do something to make this better. Especially when you log onto their websites, on 93.7 website, you see those pictures of Boston, but you can not get that station in Boston. (ANY) walkman you use, new or old, DX or not DX, HD Radio, NOTHING. It doesn't come in on a walkman. I'm assuming it's the same if you live there?
Because in my house, I can not get 103.3, 97.7 I get a little, NO 99.1, 101.7 I get it but Static fades it out, 94.5 I can not get at all, I do get 101.3, but it is very static-it's not really listenable. This is in Revere area (near Revere Beach/Beachmont area). My Uncle live in Salem, Ma, that's why I mentioned Salem a few times

There must be something they can do so we can get these major stations inside Boston on a walkman

Radio stations can't do anything. For the most part, they're broadcasting with the maximum amount of power from the best transmitter locations that are available to them. Stations with transmitters outside of Boston aren't allowed to move them closer to Boston due to interference issues with other stations. If it was legally possible for those stations to move to the Pru and transmit (the equivalent of) 50,000 watts, you know they would have already done it.

As you know, the pirate stations broadcasting in Boston are doing so illegally. Legitimate stations would not be allowed to broadcast on those frequencies and from those locations. Just because a pirate station is broadcasting in the city doesn't mean that it would be legal for a legitimate station to do it.

What should be done is manufacturers should start producing some Walkman-style portables with decent tuners! They are all junk! Good quality home and car stereo receivers don't have these problems getting those stations in those areas, only junk tuners like clock radios, boom-boxes, and Walkman-style portables!

The only one that's currently a cut above the rest for FM reception is the Insignia HD Walkman-style portable, available at Best Buy (only) for $50. Have you actually tried one of these? It's the only HD Walkman-style portable on the market as far as I know (though there are some repackages of the same radio elsewhere under other brand names).

Whether or not you care about HD radio, it gets the best overall FM reception (including regular analog) of any Walkman-style radio currently on the market as far as I know. I scanned the dial standing right in Back Bay Boston yesterday at Berkeley and Boylston St., where other Walkman-style radios would be blown away by intermodulation of stations from the Pru. The Insignia got all the stations transmitting from 128 in Newton (90.9, 94.5, 98.5, 102.5, 103.3) not only clearly, but also in HD! The same for 93.7 and 99.7. Those two weren't consistent in every spot I walked in, but you could listen to them. 101.7 was fine.

It was spotty on 99.1 and 99.5, but those stations were not originally meant to serve Boston from their outlying locations (even if their current programming is attempting to). They were originally South Shore and Merrimac Valley stations, and they are not allowed to move closer to Boston due to interference issues with other stations. With the HD radio in Boston you can hear the simulcast of 99.5 on 89.7 HD2 in most areas.

I remember the first Walkman I got around 1981, I think it was the very first Sony Walkman, it was FM only and it got excellent reception for a portable, almost as good as a car or home stereo! It also had separate left and right channel volume controls, Local/DX switch, and two headphone jacks! From there, they all went downhill over the years. The Insignia HD is the best currently available for FM as far as I know. It has no AM, but you can bring along another Walkman for AM.

29 dollar Sansa at radio shack had a perfectly good tuner. plus it records. most of the radio clips on my soundcloud are made with it

my walkman sounds great, but the AFC locks onto only strong stations, plus the analog wheel is fiddly as get out

but jazz on WHRB in the morning with that thing is insane, every crackle is heard, along with the clanking of the glasses in the smoky club

Take it from someone who has been around. Boston IS ONE OF THE BEST CITIES IN THE WORLD to listen to radio on a walkman. This is especially true if you enjoy Pop music, of the vareity heard on Mix, Kiss or Jam'n. When I was in high school, we moved to San Diego, and you could get half of the stations at any one location, but never all of them. In the northwest part of town, you could get all the Adult stations, while you had to go south and east to hear any of the Top 40 stations. It was frustrating. In Boston, I had no such problem. Evertything comes from either 128 or the Pru, neither of which are that far from each other, or impeded by much. Been all over the Boston area, and except for 93.7, I've never had trouble.

I don't know about New York City or Chicago, but Boston is a GREAT place to listen on a walkman.

I want a good walkman type radio for the greater boston area. What should I look for in specs? I used to have a pretty good no-name that fit in the palm of my hand, but have not been able to find it again at best buy.

Is there anything like the $50 one that does get AM?

Are there any music player/radio kind of combos?

mp3+fm+am is rare enough that we can discuss all the options

Degen DE1125, about 60 on ebay + shipping from china, or 79 from amazon/kaito

i have a similar Degen WBZ listening on a T window seat was possibly throughout the tunnels. i guess the various shielded cables and tracks act as a waveguide in addition to ground penetration

Not that I know of, and I don't know of any HD AM portables.

I just put the Insignia HD FM portable together with a Sony AM stereo Walkman from the '90s with a rubber band, and switch the headphones between the two.

(There are no stations in AM stereo around Boston anymore, but the Sony has more a little more high bandwidth than today's average mono AM walkmans).

I listen to radio on my walkman quite regularly. The walkman I currently use is a Sony SPORTS model that looks to be from about the early 90s. It's not the best quality for DX, but I will say it's pretty good. I also had a Realistic walkman from the late 80s, which did have separate left and right volume controls, and a leather carrying case. The reception on it was pretty darn good, but then one day it got rained on, and I haven't been able to find another one like it. It's a shame. Most of today's walkmen seem to be complete crap. And I think this is because people are using iPods these days. I know the new iPod nano features a built-in FM tuner, and I think you can download an FM tuner app for the iPhone. Has anyone ever tried these?
