Lit 97.1 Knoxville gone?

Also just noticed the 105.9 stunting too. lol. Loud is fun, & I like their stations, but they literally change everything every 3 or 4 months. With the constant format flips & the rimshot/marginal signals, i honestly think the owner must just have money & enjoy playing radio & having fun. Which is ok. I’ve always wanted to do that if I had the money. And the stations are always fun sounding.
I really think they should adjust 92.5 to a more traditional late 60s/70s oldies format instead of the odd 50s mid century thing. As we’ve said before, I can’t imagine there’s much of any audience for that anymore.

As of right now, 105.9!is still in stunt mode. Although simulcasting Atomic 106 on 105.9 would make sense in that it’s right beside the 106.1 frequency & it also covers the Blount/Sevier end of the market where 106.1 is weak. But who knows?

Yeah, musically, it is a bit of a train wreck. Even if it was a Jack FM/adult hits type station, even those aren’t quite as jarring & broad. I mean there are titles spanning the 80s to 2000s that will work together, but it takes a bit of research & tweaking. Going from things like Sean Paul & Gym Class Hero’s into The Police & Starship sound weird. Granted, i personally kinda like everything & have pretty broad & eclectic tastes in music, so it’s ok with me, but I can’t imagine too many people spending much time spent listening & not constantly punching in & out. They’re probably going to need to narrow it down a bit & pick a focus & massage the playlist a bit to make it flow better. Kinda sounds like someone’s random personal Spotify playlist at the moment.

Oh.. my oops, i thought the Atomic 106 my friend was referring to, was 105.9 I forget about the 106.1 nevermind scratch that. sorry fellas!
 
After listening longer throughout the day, yeah KVL’s music is a mess. Literally no one is going to listen to this all over the place train wreck. They literally just segued from Billy Joel’s River of Dream’s into Sean Paul We Be Burnin’. Lol. Someone needs to pick a direction & get their rotations & playlist straightened out. It sounds like they took random tracks from Fun FM & the old KVL & just threw them together. If this is what they come up with, they would’ve been better to just kill off KVL & put Fun on 104.9. Fun’s playlist could be a bit odd, but was much more focused than this
 
I hope Atomic 106 sticks around (on 106.1) as it’s my favorite of the Loud stations. No, I don’t like every song they play, but I do like a majority of them. However it seems it is underperforming in the ratings, so who knows how long it will stick around.

Yeah the mix on KVL is just awkward. The one that hit me was a Chris Brown song into Genesis “Invisible Touch.” It reminds me of the train wreck segues on the canned music at Kroger. Of course we’re all a captive audience there. But I would never choose to listen to such a format.

I’m not sure what they could do at 105.9. I really think “Fun” failed there because of the signal. I had always thought that a decent signal classic hits could do well here, but now we’re getting to the point that “Jack FM” is very close to a modem day classic hits format, so it fills that niche.

As for trying to figure out what Loud is doing, juggling these formats every few months is fun for us radio geeks to observe, but they will never be able to make any headway with these small signals.
 
I like a lot of Loud's branding and formats but I don't get what the business case is here.

If you're changing things as often as they do, how do you establish an audience and sell airtime? Doesn't the entire business depend on attracting audience, keeping them because you're meeting that expectation, and then delivering that audience to advertisers who may actually have an idea of what your format is and who it's reaching?

Can't really do that when you change every quarter.

That’s why I said it seems like the owner must have money & is just having fun “playing radio”. I mean with the limited signals & constant changes every few months, there’s obviously not much advertising money to be had. And they’ve never had much local advertising beyond the bartered national stuff. Also, their playlists are often kind of bizarre with a lot of what many would consider “stiffs” or “wow factor” songs. I get they probably don’t want to spend money on consultants or research, but it’s pretty easy to just pull playlists & libraries from MBase & emulate other successful stations in the formats. So just seems to me like someone’s hobby or passion. Which is cool. I’d love to be able to do that. And I am grateful for the extra variety it brings to the market. Otherwise these marginal signals & translators would probably just be yet another religious network affiliate.

Also looking at the old Fun FM website, in the ads directing listeners to KVL & WKCE. I see where WKCE now has the tagline of “The Best of the 60s & 70s” on the ad. Maybe this means they are finally going to do 60s/70s oldies instead of the odd Mid Century 50s format.

That’s interesting. I didn’t catch that. That kind of move would make sense. It’s funny that out of all of this company’s changes over the last however many years they’ve been here, WKCE has been the one constant (other than frequently changes). ‘50s & ‘60s can be a fun format, but they get too obscure with their music choices.

What I don’t get is why they decided to simulcast “Fun” on 97.1 for that week. If they weren’t planning to move it there, I figured they were just trying to get it some exposure to get more people to tune into 105.9. But since they are gone too, that weeklong simulcast makes no sense now.

Yeah, I do hope they evolve WKCE into a more traditional 60s/70s oldies format. But it’s Loud, so they’ll probably just throw the 70s music in with the current format & we’ll end up with segues of Bobby Darin & Hank Williams Sr into Chic and Kansas, lol.

I also find the simulcast of Fun on 97.1 odd too if they were killing it off. Also as mentioned earlier, I honestly think a classic hits format on a better signal could do reasonably well in the market. Jack does kind of fill that whole, but I find classic hits & adult hits stations to have different feels to them. (also Jack FM type adult hits formats tend to skew male while classic hits often have more female listeners). Anyway, I’m kinda surprised they didn’t put Fun on 97.1 (or even 104.9). Seems like an obvious market hole, & 97.1’s coverage is somewhat decent in the city itself. A classic hits format might pull like an upper 1 or 2 share range, which is certainly better than Loud’s stations usually do. Seems kind of like a missed opportunity. And I get that classic hits, & even moreso, oldies skew twrds older less desirable demos. But when you are working with limited, handicapped signals, it would make sense to own that unique segment no one else is targeting.
 
I’m not near a radio right now, but according to Atomic 106’s Facebook page, posted about 45 minutes ago, they are now also on 105.9 (and presumably 1400).
 
Streaming Loud’s revamped classic hits station in Saratoga Springs/Albany now (WSSV “Star Radio”). They rebranded from Fun Fm this morning. Sounds good & actually well focused musically. This is the format they should prob put on KVL instead of the weird random mix they are currently doing.

They’re also airing the syndicated Greg Beharrell show middays. I always enjoy his quirky bits & wouldn’t mind having his voice tracked show in Knox.
 
I looked at a few hours of WSSV’s playlist and yes it does look good and mostly well-focused. I would probably listen if it was done here, although they can’t use “Star” here. Also it’s very close musically to Jack FM, so I’m not sure it can be competitive. But anything goes with Loud Media.

I finally heard the 105.9/106.1 simulcast while parked in Seymour, of course 105.9 was stronger. They stopped for ABC News at the top of the hour, not sure why that was neccesary. nI figured one of Loud's signals would flip to Christmas soon.
