Lite 100.5 on the air, Yo 107.1 almost

As of Friday morning, Lite 100.5 FM (WQKS-HD2) was over the air via transmitter in Montgomery.

The transmitter at 107.1 seemed to be operating, but it was transmitting silence.

As of Saturday afternoon, no changes.

No, the power increase was granted, but a modification to the tower site had to be filed. That CP hasn't been granted yet. Any day now.

Nice office friendly format. Traffic & weather and even commercial already. I prefer a gold based Soft AC like this to Hot AC any day. Hopefully it's a deep playlist with little repetition like traditional AC's have been in the past.

checking out YO now. It may be a good format to Flank the other urban stations in the market.

How do these stations sound on the air? The streams both sound pretty good to my ears. Lite is a little on the crispy side but YO sounds fairly decent for low bandwith aac streaming.

The sound of 100.5 is fine over the air. Once or twice early in the morning with fog in the area going by a certain pole or tower, WAPI will try and intrude but it is a very short interruption - however it is most difficult for me to tune in 100.5 at the two home locations in east Montgomery where I have tried - the bleedover from Y 102 is atrocious. No problem whatsoever right outside or going between in the car. I am in line of sight (as is a lot of Montgomery of the big tower), almost due south.

Good to know the online option will remain intact for both stations afterwards, not to mention the HD choice as well.

Back in February of 2010, I was listening to a mp3 clip of Matt Murphy talking about Live 100.5 going off the air. I don't recall all the details to that clip, so please correct me if I'm wrong. I believe he mentioned something about wanted to be on the 100.5 fm frequency (now WAPI-FM) so his show would reach the ears of the politicians in Montgomery. Well, I suppose this new Lite 100.5 being around puts a damper to that goal.

I don't live in these markets, but I did found this tidbit to be very interesting.

I've had a lot of business in the Carmichael Road area of Montgomery in the past month or so, and today I brought my new phone with an FM radio in it. Performing my first sit-down scan inside of an one-story office, I got the upgraded(?) 104.9 translator for The Gump pretty fairly, with a slight headphone-as-antenna adjustment improving reception.

I note Carmichael Road because I was within a fifth-grader's football pass of the Bluewater offices. One of the full power stations I didn't get at all on my first scan, for whatever reason? 97.9 Jamz. Probably meaningless and grossly unscientific, but I was a bit surprised by it.

I'm disappointed that new station[let] Lite 100.5 is on the air, but Yo! 107.1 still isn't. What's the holdup, Blue crew?

Confirmed. Although the transmission seems just a bit, uh, scratchy. Not overpowering, but something seems just a wee bit out of kilter. Maybe it was the location where I was picking it up.

I heard something strange on Lite 100.5 a few moments ago.

Return of the Mack - Mark Morrison.

It's a great song that I still enjoy but it sounded out of place next to My Love - Paul McCartney.

Seems as though the playlist has been enlarged from the last time I heard Lite online...although given the time I spent listening to it the first time or two around, I might have been unfair in my assessment as to its close similarity with what Mix is already offering.

In regards to music being played that doesn't "mesh" well with the rest of the format...I listened to Lite again a few weeks ago, and I'm wondering what direction the station is taking. Their Facebook page says they offer artists such as Neil Diamond and Barry Manilow..."easy listening" artists which are more closely associated with a traditional soft AC format which would have been on the air 25 years ago. The current version of what is soft AC today has a much broader playlist and no longer offers these artists. There are a few stations across the country, though, such as Easy 93 in Miami, Lite 95.9 in Charleston, SC and Carolina 92.1 in Columbia, SC which are resurrecting the format with those artists I just mentioned above. So, when I saw the info on Lite's Facebook page (as well as tuning into the station and hearing other "easy listening" artists such as Barbra Streisand, John Denver among others), I was assuming Lite was offering a format similar to those stations I just mentioned above. At times on Lite, though, I hear music that, IMO, sounds very out of place on the station...artists such as KT Tunstall and En Vogue. for instance. While it's not out of the ordinary to hear those artists and their music on today's version of soft AC, they sound very incongruous with a traditional soft AC format, which, again, is what I assumed Lite was offering. It is though the format is riding the fence between these two formats (traditional and a current version of soft AC), given how both easy listening artists and more uptempo AC music is being mixed in together. I don't understand it myself. I am more inclined to listening to traditional soft AC (without having to hear artists such as KT Tunstall and En Vogue). It all seems counterproductive to me...traditional soft AC listeners like myself may not want to hear any of these artists on Lite, while Mix listeners might not be swayed in switching stations when they hear certain "easy listening" artists they are unaccustomed to hearing on Mix...and might not care for, anyway.

Both WFEZ 93.1 in Miami and WDUV 105.5 in Tampa offer the easy listening format. Both are owned by Cox Radio. It is definately different than the other stations out there... I did listen to lite 100.5 a couple weeks ago, and heard a couple of "Timeless Favorites" style songs from the Dave Clark Five and Elton John, but for the most part to me it sounds like a hybrid mix of Mix 103 and Q96.1.

Speaking of WDUV... check out their website and read the name of their morning show host; it is worth the 10 seconds it takes to visit the website. The name (which I find hilarious) definately does NOT go too well with the format. ;D
