Lite 93.5 now 93.5 SBG

Surprised no one mentioned yet that Lite 93.5 from Stroudsburg apparently is no longer calling themselves Lite 93.5. Now it's 93.5 SBG The Poconos Best Variety. Sounds more of just an imaging tweak. Music hasn't changed much. Funny because folks over on the Lehigh Valley board just got done pointing out that Lite 93.5 wasn't so light anymore. It was hotter. Now this imaging change. Looks like the folks over there were right, but it's more appropriate to talk about 93.5 here on the NE PA board than on the Lehigh board. Isn't Stroudsburg more NE PA than Lehigh Valley?

You know, life is tough when a radio station cannot identify which market it truly belongs. Case in point is WSBG. They continue to change or "fine tune" their format every so often and the real issue in hand is getting a quality signal into a ratings market. WSBG suffers from a fringe signal into the Allentown and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton markets. Nassau needs to take (another) look on how to improve their signal into one of these markets so WSBG can be an upper tier station. A translator or perhaps simulcasting, tower relocation, increase of transmitter power etc. are all examples that can be approached upon. Unfortunately, these options will cost money and Nassau may not have deep enough pockets to support these ideas so they opted out on a less expensive idea in changing the format (once again!). Their previous formats would have done much better, demos and revenue wise, if WSBG had a very good signal into these markets as stated above. I have listened to WSBG lately and in the past and the music sounds good. However, I really do not think that the music was the root of the problem here. If Nassau wants true success with WSBG, a change in signal would provide fast and much better results.

Trixter....

Maybe....

In most arbitron rated markets, there are a plethora of radio stations, often formats which are duplicated twice or three times, salesmen/women in suits, driving beamers, with huge station vehicles, morning personalities, personalities in other dayparts, layers of staff and management, supporting engineering staff, etc.

While Stroudsburg has a couple of stations, and it's obvious by the stations there showing up in the Arbs that they do OK attracting listenership, they serve Stroudsburg, where the stations from the "metro" won't do this. This can be a great position to be in, having the station that "owns" a town.

Now, that being said, Allentown has very, very few radio stations per capita, and I feel strongly that a move in to that market could do well. In Allentown, even AM's which broadcast at less than 1000 watts daytime do well....because there aren't many radio stations. Fortunately for the operators in Allentown, and sadly for anyone else who would want to move a station into Allentown, because of it's proximity to other major markets which are full of stations, a move into Allentown would be impossible on AM or FM.

But, sometimes being a big fish in a small bowl is more satisfying and profitable than being one of many (or too many) small fish in a big bowl.

Fish food for thought.

A BIG FISH in a small pond is always a good thing. Know what and who you are. Serve the listeners and advertisers with all your might. If a musical change is what the market is begging for , give it to them. 93.5 WSBG I am liking what I hear. A welcome change. Good Luck.

I see that they're using the exact same logo as 98.3 WLNH in Laconia, NH. They recently switched to "98-3 LNH" from "98.3 WLNH." They've always been Hot AC, but with this change, they seem to have changed from more of a AC leaning one, to more mainstream.

Now that Arbitron is placing Monroe County into the Allentown Bethlehem Book and Nassau sells WSBG along with WODE in Northampton County I can see why there is mention on the LV board...Yes Monroe is in the Wilkes Barre DMA, but alot of traffic flows South on 33 for employment.
