Lite FM goes Country

The Lite shut off today at Noon as 94.5 Lite FM is now Hot Country B94.5. Steven Lewis is overseeing it & Kim Faris is also aboard. She did Country back in the early 80s at 93 WJAI(Now WGTZ Fly 92.9).

It's going to be a long, bloody battle if they hope to pull shares away from WHKO. K-99.1 is far from bulletproof, but it's a very solid and well-programmed station.

Any idea what they'll do in mornings? Bobby Bones perhaps?

I can see why! Lite took a tumble into the 2 range. That, plus big numbers for K99, equals station death. Oh, and this will take some numbers out of K99, and will give some audience to Mix 107.7 . CC might have a top-rated station on their hands.

Three questions:

A) Why did BIG 106.5 live while Lite 94.5 die? The two stations had the same ratings, but Lite 94.5 had the advantage of having some Christmas music during the winter, and Lite and skewed younger (good for sales).

B) Does anybody else think that other station changes at CC and/or Cox are in order?

C) What was the last song on Lite FM? Just curious.

Oh, I just remembered: CC tried country with 106.5 the Bull back in 2009. I can imagine the rousing success story that was- oh, wait. That station fell within 11 months.

Well, looks like CC is a firm believer in the somewhat-cliched motto: "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again!"

I see WHY CC chose country on 94.5, but Cox will find the best-testing 160 or so titles for their library (they spend money on research) and be next to impossible to beat. K-99.1 will be hard to attack from the left flank because of this. They're slightly more vulnerable on the right flank, but CC has chosen to attack left-center.

With Kim Faris on board, they have at least some hope of survival. ;)

Honestly, they stand no chance against K99.1. K99.1 has ratings that show up in the Cincinnati market thanks to their 50kW blowtorch. In the city of Cincinnati, 94.5 is a WKFS-HD2 AKA 700 WLW FM rimshot translator, and once you get about 15-20 miles outside of Cincinnati (at least on the east side), its a garbled mix of WMXL Lexington and 94.5 from Dayton. If they are trying to steal 99.1's ratings, they need a HUGE signal. Take out Mix 107.7, WTUE, or Channel 999. All 3 can be heard throughout WHKO's service contour (albeit alot weaker)

Well, This kills any talk of 101.5 going country now. Anyone think B94.5 will last longer than Buckeye Country did on 106.5? What's old is new again it seems.

What an odd pick to change formats. The Lite format was 20 years old. Wonder who does xmas music 24/7 in Dayton now? Can't believe they managed to keep this quiet

It is strange that they would go country on on that tiny signal. Maybe it's a place holder format until CC can find a buyer? I wasn't wrong when I said what's is old is new again in the Dayton market. Country was tried twice on 106.5 and failed same with Oldies and Smooth Jazz.

I'll be curious to see if another station in Dayton flips as a response and takes on the Soft AC format as well as the Christmas music. If not, I wouldn't be surprised to see WFCJ or WEEC get jolly around Thanksgiving.

Interesting move for CC. For those who wanted to know, I do have a few facts.

- Steven Lewis is the PD. For those who aren't familiar, he's the "PD" of Channel 999. I put it in quotes because that word doesn't have much use at CC anymore. Steven is in charge of keeping the station sounding fresh, CC corporate programs it. Steven just drops a few songs in every hour (sometimes). AND just like Channel 999, this is Premium Choice with fresh imaging.

- Bobby Bones is confirmed for mornings. He used to do CHR, but he's now the Elvis Duran of country stations. Good solid show though! The rest of the staff is Premium Choice besides Kim Faris in afternoons similar to how Steven Lewis does afternoons on Channel. Seeing the pattern? :D

- The last song on Lite was We Said Hello, Goodbye by Phil Collins. The first song on B was The Only Way I Know by Jason Aldean.

- Depending on how K's ratings look is whether it will stay. They don't have too many options, if this doesn't work, I predict Urban.

I'm interested to see how this plays out, but K will be very hard to compete with. This would be a good time to bring AC to Click 1015 and be the area's XMAS leader.

I wonder if they think old LITE listeners would go to BIG, though I noticed on they goodbye message they suggested MIX. I was thinking BIG's ratings had steadily went up since its inception, but I just checked and saw they've been declined a bit since last fall.

BIG's number one on my dial, that's my type of music. On a trip to Chicago, I picked it up until about New Castle exits on 70. Going to Columbus, I've gotten it to Plain City exit on 70. Going down to Cincinnati in April, it didn't fade out until King's Mills. I've never had any problems picking it up on my walkman anywhere around Dayton/Springfield. Their signal crushes 945, which can barely be picked up in Springfield.

BIG ran Christmas music on weekends last winter.

Thank you very much on that information on the Last Song.

For notoriety, here's the goodbye note on the website. Not sure if it will be up in the future, so I may as well post it right here.

As George Harrison once said, all things must pass, and that time has finally come for LITE 94.5 as a radio station.
It was a long, long successful run for LITE. Far longer than the lifespan of most radio stations, and we owe that sustained success to you.
Thank you for your support and listenership to LITE 94.5. We very much enjoyed sharing some great music and good times
with you over the years, and hope you enjoyed the experience as much as we did.

As you begin your search for another radio station, we would encourage you to give our sister station MIX 107.7 a try.
You can give them a try right now by clicking here. Click here to go to www.mix1077.com

We wish you all the best as you move forward in your life, and thanks again for your companionship over the years!

Take care,

Kim, Matt, Doreen, Delilah

CC is not worried about Christmas music. Heck they flipped 94.9 in Atlanta while it was PLAYING Christmas music several Decembers ago.

Heck if CC wants Christmas so bad they will flip 106.5 or 107.7 to it.. If CC's set on Christmas THEY will find a place.

I forgot that Big probably will become the station to play the XMAS music similar to Oldies 933 here.

I don't believe that AC is a dying format at all, it has a place, but it has to be on the right frequency. 94.5 wasn't working based on the signal, the gold lean that it has, and I don't feel CC advertised enough that the new format was on 945.

The Lite AC format is becoming like the Smooth Jazz Format. Columbus Ohio blew their's up last year and this also happened in Chicago last week. WRRM in Cincinnati is having rating problems too. I don't believe CC's plan is not to take WHKO head on but flank them with Hot Country and take just a piece of their franchise/monopoly. The Bull was in Greenville and Kiss was in Springfield so with WLQT's Transmitter located in Dayton, even if it is class A, it is a better move then having a Lite AC with minimal ratings.
