Lite Nosedive

They have been in a steady nosedive since the Spring 05 book. Was that great book for them a fluke and the latest numbers realistic, or have they gone into the tank that far that fast?

Maybe I'm wrong so forgive me if I am...but didn't the book overlap the Christmas Season? If it did considering they played the same 15 Christmas songs 24 hours a day might have something to do with it. Then again I could be wrong...who knows in this market.

I read an article in R&R recently about the number of stations that are dropping Delilah like a bad habit. Not saying she is the be all and end all for the station, as she is only on for one daypart...but it seems the overall consensus is that she has "had her day". One can only stomach so much of her "tell me your story" and "'l'll get a sappy love song on for your man sitting in prision who you are so eagerly waiting to welcome when he is released"

And perhaps AJ makes a point with the All Christmas Music comment. That may appeal to some, but I bet a lot of others were turned off by it...after all, over a month of Christmas Tunes is enough to drive anyone bonkers.

But the biggest thing overall is I think Lite has gotten away from promoting itself. Used to hear or see them everywhere...postcards mailed to you in your home and business urging you to tune in, ads in the paper...lots of businesses playing the station for you to hear.

Lite and easy works...it was the bread and butter for WFBG-FM for many years before Froggy. I'd bet if they cut back on Delilah and found something more music intensive and less "story telling" for their nights and got back to really promoting the station like they did when it was new, they'd be right back up where they were.

lite fm in nyc just picked up delilah, wsb-fm in atlanta just picked up delilah, i think it was within the past year she went on wash-fm in dc.

i drive across the country and hear delilah in every market i pass through...seems she is bigger than ever.

WLTW New York had Delilah forced on it. CC owns the station and owns Premier Network which distributes her show. To clear the path for her, they zapped their local queen of sappy love songs, JJ Kennedy who has more talent in her left big toenail than Delilah has in her whole being. They also fired their long time morning personality, Bill Buchner, who had real talent as well.

I find "D" revolting and turn the radio off when she comes on. Her lead-in on WLTS is interesting. He has an annoying voice, but he delivers well and has just enough good stuff to say to make it worth listening. The woman on before him is easy to listen to. The new morning guy/p.d. is WAY too fast and upbeat and adenoidal for the format. I don't like getting shrieked at in the morning. Lite 99 was screechy enough before he came along.

As for the "nosedive," is the book out?

The book is out. WALY is amazing in their oldies format. Altoona remains a good AM market as well with FBG, VAM, RTA, and KMC all doing very well.

Just to clarify for those who don't know, Clear Channel owns Premiere and all CC stations are required to carry a percentage of Premiere services.

You may have a point about the Christmas songs. Did they really play the same 15 songs 24 hours a day? Fifteen.......? Yeah, who knows in this market. It's tough to see when you're sittin' near the bottom. Trust your gut.

What happened? Lite moved signals, changed talent (the little they had), pulled the morning show, and tweaked to non-lite fare in a misguided effort to hurt 3WZ. Any questions?

Search for the articles yourself. In fact, I think there is even a thread on the subject on radio-info as well. And more to the point...as you are driving across the countryside...why are you seeking out Delilah? I'd think you'd be avoiding that dribble like the plague. I'd rather listen to Rosie O'Donnel's mindless blather than Delilah's "I'm your friend...tell me your life history" routine and I know a lot of intelligent woman who are within Lite's target demo who feel the same way. If you want that kinda stuff, watch Oprah instead.

Worse than fingernails on a chalkboard. There is a reason 3-WZ ditched the program in the first place when they used to have it.

i don't have time to search through old articles...i'm at work and busy. but i did read this in usatoday last year: http://www.usatoday.com/life/2006-08-02-night-listener_x.htm

i'll search some other day steve.

some of the calls are touching...but for real i do enjoy the music...mainly the 70s and 80s stuff she plays...and she is not afraid to mix in bread, the carpenters, dionne warwick, etc. it's nice to hear that big variety. the other nite i heard her play true companion from marc cohn (1991 song that no one likes to spin anymore).

btw...when i am in the car driving for 15 hours...i scan through all the stations. that's why i drive instead of fly...it gives me a chance to sample all these stations.

Please....let us be real.
Delilah has nothing to do with the extreme radio malpractice that effects Lite.
It has been a fixture through good book and bad book.
No,
Lite is the epitome of the Forever template.
A)
Make a solid business decision in purchasing the frequency. Determine what demo needs to be served.
B)
Create a format to meet that need.
C)
Put it in the hands of an incompetent autocrat. Tweak it, mess with it, complain about it, find its weak spot, focus on it, then kill (fire) it.
D) Blame somebody.

Bulls eye !!

One last thing....Bob and Sheri are admittedly lame....but maybe lame is the demo.
The Kerbster is proven right again...... Forever (mis)management whiffs again. Shields to face the presidential wrath?
