Rock KKZR Flips to Contemporary Christian
ARCHWAY Rock KKZR (THE RAZOR 93.3)/LITTLE ROCK flips to Contemporary Christian music format today, OCTOBER 16. Citing a rise in popularity and increasing sales in the genre, the new SPIRIT 93.3 will feature popular AC artists such as MICHAEL W. SMITH, AVALON and AMY GRANT.

ARCHWAY Market Manager DAVID ROEDERER says, “Our research indicates LITTLE ROCK is underserved in the fastest growing music genre sweeping the country. A format that offers Adult Contemporary music featuring Christian artists like AMY GRANT, MICHAEL W. SMITH, AVALON and many more, coupled with family oriented values is proving hugely popular throughout the U.S. SPIRIT 93.3 will be LITTLE ROCK’S first radio station offering entertainment and uplifting music in a family filtered environment safe for children and adults. LITTLE ROCK is an important city on any Christian artist live tour and it is clear our community would like to hear more of this great music every day on a local radio station. We are very excited to serve LITTLE ROCK families in this most responsible way.”

THE RAZOR website (www.933therazor.com) flashes the new SPIRIT 93.3 logo and allows visitors to listen online while the new website is under construction.

For more information contact AERON PETERS, SPIRIT 93.3, 400 Hardin Road, Suite 150, LITTLE ROCK, AR, 72211 or by phone at (501) 219-1919.

I hear Wade McShane on the mic this morning...

Does that mean that they're carrying Salem's TCM format?

I hope that this just a start and they plan to get local people at least for drive time. I go to Little Rock occasionally and might listen when I'm there.

I still don't trust a secular ownership group to do a CCM format and stay with it though. If they don't make enough money to suit them, how long will it actually last?

In Indianapolis it lasted nearly 23 years.

Right now I'm listening to them on the web, and they've been playing easy listening Christmas music, apparently as filler, because they came back to Salem's in the middle of a song. It sounds more to my like they threw this together on short notice and they don't even have any CCM to play locally yet.

i like the little arrow pointer (whatever its called)..it looks like the metal salute sign ;D leftover from the rock station?

Dave used to be CC Market Manager here in Evansville.. Best to them... However, I find the artist selection proves my longtime point of all Christian Formated stations....Five to Seven years behind the cultural eight ball.... What the mainstream calls A/C would be called CHR in Christian and what is A/C in Christian is really easy-light A/C in secular... The continued lack of edgy formatics in Christian radio (in most A/C, CHR and Inspo stations) causes one to wonder about secular owners who find a very loyal audience (in Christian CHR & A/C) with fast growth in the first 18 months and then a leveling off and little or no growth from there on out... Could it be the same problem the anti-contemporary Christians stations had in the 60's, 70's and most of the 80's; "Playing to the Choir"????? The old 80% of Christian radio plays to 20 % of the available Christian market and most Evangelical and Catholic circles still listen more to their secular choices??? I think we are afraid that we will offend our safest audience, thus taking any 'Evangelism' thrust out of our stations... When that has been done (time and era after era), marginal Christians who have focused away from the daily walk and those seeking and searching for the truth only find "Christian-ease" and a cultural Christianity (that again, plays for the Church faithful of the 25 to 54 variety and mostly to the females).... Our local secular group that gave the Salem A/C network a shot was promoting it as a Teen to Baby Boomer monster...Ratings were good (as good and better than the "Jack" format on the frequency, now), but with no local air-staff and bonus spots running for R rated movies from the other FM's in the cluster, their (in reality) 35 to 64 audience with about 70% female over male listener ship, sank quickly.... Due to an unability to deliver the true 25 to 54 audience to advertisers and the fact our local A/C-Inspo-Teaching FM in the market for almost two decades is non-com and that where the local audience feels ownership with (even if they are more 35 and up based).... Just some thought standing from the side, after half of my radio work in Christian CHR and New-Rock/Alternative.... There is still great Christian radio out there...But, we are more concerned of increasing our pew support in dollars and ad support, instead of hitting potiential listeners with the daily walk of The Gospel.... If you don't offend somebody with your station (Christian or non-Christian), you're probably playing Church.....We are to be a vitamin to the Believer and a Cold Cup of Water to the Lost who identify with the language of our formats.... Harder to find these days.... Just a note, not a condemnation......OBSERVATION only..... From a 30+ year vet of every aspect of radio....

The word "all" makes me jump in, here.

You're noting what you're noting because the station has picked up that same Salem feed. Salem is virtually unique in its music selection (other Burkhardt-consulted stations tend to have very similar). If you get away from them, you might find yourself surprised.

I must admit to being very concerned about the number of "AC" stations I've heard taking what really sound like distinct steps toward Inspo....

Whereas a number of stations had sounds similar to their secular counterparts just a couple of years ago, only a handful do now.

Yep...Pull up the R&R stuff and compare tempo and styles and I think that's the point I will make... On the plus side of Salem, they have done what they do, VERY WELL for a VERY LONG TIME....They are providing programming and music to the Chrisitan audience in many communities that would never be able to afford buying out a commercial or non-com... Especially in the major player markets like NYC and even in Mediums like LR... Sure beats not having the outlets.... I am looking at it as a radio-socioligist.... What we think is hip is usually somewhat outdated, leaning to Evangelicals who are white and female... Nothing wrong with that, just an observation....
