KSSN rules the roost again...''good mornin' darlin'...here's your birthdays!''

You're in the Bible belt...gospel does well in Little Rock just as it does in Memphis.
KHLR appears to have taken a bite out of KOKY and KIPR.

Interesting that KMJX (Magic 105) continues to sputter and cough but nobody at
Clear Channel will put it out of it's misery. Also, KURB (B98) fired it's longtime morning
host, Scott Thrower, because of contractual issues...this book, however, still
reflects Thrower's presence. Now the pressure is on Clear Channel to move
KMJX up and on Citadel to keep KURB up.

I've never understood why, but KSSN is possibly the most under-estimated radio station in Central Arkansas. All most competitors hear is "aw shucks, Happy Birthday..." and the reality is that KSSN is so ingrained that it will be almost impossible for anyone to unseat them. Way to go Bob!

except for the first bit when it was a "news" station (KXXA - anybody remember that?) - add in the fact that for 25+ years, it ain't been nothin' but a country station.

every station around it has changed formats at least once. and competitors have moved into the market too.

nobody's been able to knock them down.

;D

okay. so there was that one time.

just once.

but not since, right? LOL

I believe you're right...and that was 20 years ago...From the party we had at Zoo you would have thought KSSN had torn down the tower, turned off the lights, and left town.

After KZOU, I engineered KSSN for a couple of years. Jerry Atchley is still high on my list of favorite folks to work for...

KSSN puts the 'heritage' in heritage stations...

KSSN is one of many 'heritage' stations around the country that continue to stay at the top in their markets year after year because they've been there year-in and year-out. The Little Rock market is a country music market. However, things change. Even 'heritage' stations can take a hit when demographics change.

When I first started in radio, I worked for a 1kw directional AM in a market of about 350,000 people. At night you could get the station 5 miles from it's xmtr, but it was #1 in the market because Country Music was hot then, too (this was in the 70's). They had a staff of 'live' on-air personalities in which the one with the least on-air time had been there for 10 years. And the station had so much influence in the market, it was a Billboard reporting station for their Country charts.

Radio has a lot more competition these days from new technologies and the industry isn't accepting it well.

What makes things interesting in Little Rock radio is the positioning that takes place below the #1 spot.

KSSN is king in Little Rock, and just about every small market in the state. Look at a county-by-county breakdown at some point. You'll see that as far as the local listener goes, Bob and Company give the local swap shop a run for it's money.
