I think it is time WROR brought some heritage back to the city.

Put LITTLE WALTER on in drive-time!

TERRA MARA TONIGHT
Wed, 17 Jan 2007 13:27:13 -0500

HI Rock and Rollers,
Just a quick reminder that this is the weekend for our Rock and roll
dance party at TERRA MARA, a great club in the Guest House Suites Hotel at
exit 47 off route 93 next to the Outback Steak house in Methuen. We only do
this one weekend a month so every night is quite special and I hope you take
part in the party. This Friday and Saturday night only, January 19th and
20th. I'm hoping to see you there.

Oh yea, don't forget our Sunday night edition of LITTLE WALTER'S TIME
MACHINE at 8 o'clock on NORTHSHORE 104.9 all over New England.

Keep Rockin',
Little Walter

FOR THOSE WHO MISSED MY ARTICLE ON LW

Maybe when WROR starts playing doo wop from the 50's (of course that will never happen) but until then that idea is without any logical base other than nepotism. I notice you only champion your friends Joe. hardly ever any objectivity to your opinions.

actually, Walter has a great voice and doesn't want to do 60s 70s 80s. I wish he would because he is a lot more talented than the afternoon drive talent WBCN and WAAF have given us over the past 15 years.

You see, Towerbuzz, your problem is you don't realize the veteran jocks can do all sorts of gigs - Loren & Wally can do Country Music, Harvey Wharfield can go to a New Hampshire station and do Progressive Talk Radio,
Little Walter can spin things other than the Doo Wop (and if you went to Terra Mara, as I have, you would hear a lot of great 60s music, so it isn't just Doo Wop, which i'm not into).

Trouble with jocks from the 80s and 90s, so one dimensional. WBCN gave us a Howard Stern ripoff that couldn't land on his feet, WAAF gave us a revolving door of faceless personalities. Jocks come and go these days...Howie Carr is about the only local on-air personality that carved a name out (on the back of Jerry Williams); Jay Severin somehow managed to get a piece of the pie, but they both won't be remembered as THE BIG MATTRESS and even your friend Parenteau will be.

Off air he got what he had coming (maybe not, but what can you do), but if you can over look his vile personal life, you have to admit that mid-80's Parenteau on-air was one of the true highlights of Boston radio. He lost a little off his fast ball as he balded, but who didn't?

you are right, Lucy Lu. You know WROR would love to have Parenteau on afternoons if not for the Tom Finneran times 100 liability that he brings to the table.

I'm sure he can, but that's not the point. Little Walter is forever associated with 50s R&B, which is not exactly WROR's image....even if he just played 60s tunes, his style (and the style of music associated with him) still doesn't fit. He has zero cred (or for that matter..name recognition) with WROR's target audience. It's like Arnie Ginsburg playing altrock or hip-hop.

to Oldbones and Raccoon, my point is that Walter is a major talent with a great voice a la J J Wright, Wharfield, Paula Street, etc. etc. We identify him with Doo Wop but most WROR listeners don't know who he is.

WROR would get Walter's fan base and a pro voice. What are there, 10,000 people out of close to 4 million in this region that know he is a Doo Wop specialist and a great mastering engineer. I'm being liberal with that figure. Most people don't pay attention as we do.

Thank you.

Would someone please attempt to explain to Joe that disagreement with him is not a personal attack on him?. Would someone please explain to Joe that everyone has their own personal preferences but his are always tied to his agenda and only those who support his agenda?. Would someone please explain to Joe that a statement like Jocks from the 80's and 90's are only capable of doing one thing is as ignorant as saying that women are only capable of doing mid days, African Americans only capable of doing Urban or R & B. Shame on you for your intolerance!. We are not talking about older jocks as a category, we are talking about LITTLE WALTER, ONE OLDER JOCK, A SPECIFIC CASE. Since Joe brought up his pals as always: What has Harvey Wharfield done in the past ten years? what has Arnie Ginsburg (forgive me I honestly do not remember is he still with us? or did he pass?) done in the past ten years?. It goes both ways Joe. You cannot say jocks from one era ten years ago can't do more than one thing but then turn around and say that jocks from thirty, forty or fifty years ago who have ONLY DONE one thing and are associated with one thing for their enitre careers are so versatile.[EDIT]

[EDIT-inflammatory]

I agree. And frankly I was never that impressed with Little Walter. The shtick seemed out-dated and uninteresting. ROR tried the "let's bring back old DJs" thing... it didn't work.

I would bet my bank account that Paul Perry will be the next PM drive host. I'm sure that deal has been in the works since he started part time. True, he probably doesn't want to read liner cards... but it's amazing what you'll do when you're out of work.

He's a good jock, I look foward to hearing him.

Talent is talent. Little Walter can still pack a room with people from different states, all dancing and having fun.

He doesn't have to troll this board under a nom de plume. If Towerbuzz put his name out there how many people would he draw? Remember when 1 person showed up for Carter Alan's book signing?

Where is Little Walter packing rooms of people from out of state?

up at Terra Mara. The response was so overwhelming they had two weekends in one month (4 nights). That's tough for anyone to do! Good for Walter! I'd like to see other jocks do this. He's an entertainer, and that appears to be a lost art.

Yeah, to be honest, I'm not impressed with someone who can fill a crappy restaurant inside a hotel in Methuen. Still doesn't sound like afternooon drive material to me.

Talent is talent but jocks from the 80's and 90's are one dimsnsional? ::) Joe keep in mind that the demo of most active rock or alternative rock stations is men 18-24 and men 18-34 which according to your own "short bio" puts you a good twenty years older than the oldest member of that demo. So it stands to reason that you cannot appreciate what jocks from this generation have to offer when you're still trying to push the likes of "Woo Woo Ginsburg and LIttle Walter. Nobody likes to admit that they're old and out of touch as you clearly are. It would be a shock if anyone under the age of 60 had any idea who Little Walter was.

What does a Carter Alan book signing have to do with any of this? again with the jumbled thoughts. How would you know that only one person showed unless that one person was you?. if not like everything else you offer as fact it's hearsay and opinion. Two very different animals.

I've been a big fan of Walter for almost 40 years, since he began "The Time Machine" in 1968 on MIT college station WTBS (now WMBR). He's an all-time great 1950's/early 60's Doo-Wop, Rock'n'Roll, R&B and early Soul DJ, an incredible music reissue producer, and he throws a really fun live "sock hop". I learned almost all I know about music of that era from his shows and his music reissues, and I had the privilege of working with him at the former 1150 WMEX oldies station in the mid-80's.

However, he would not be any kind of a fit for WROR, nor would he himself want to be on WROR doing their format. If Walter wanted a job playing late 60's, 70's and 80's music, he could've easily toned down his screaming 50's DJ delivery a little, and have done it many times over by now. But, that's not what he wants to do. It wouldn't be Little Walter.

I recall Walter doing some other fill-ins besides his "Time Machine" show during his last days at WODS. They were making him play their regular format of late 60's and 70's hits, and he sounded out of his element. He was certainly professional sounding enough, but he wasn't into it. It simply wasn't his style.

I'd love to hear Walter back on a powerful signal doing his weekly "Time Machine" live, but the time has passed for the 1950's music genre on major market stations. They consider the demo "too old" for the sponsors. They're not interested in his audience due to age.

So, we can hear his syndicated show that he sends out to a few dozen smaller retro/niche oldies stations across the country such as 104.9 WBOQ on Sunday nights 8pm-midnight. I still enjoy it. (Though I also enjoy Bill Clark's "Music Heaven" doo-wop show hosted live on WATD in Marshfield Sunday nights 10pm-2am).
