Live 105.7

CBS has killed FM Talk in Baltimore. This morning they flipped Live 105.7 WFHS to FM Sports WJZ-FM (105.7 The Fan). Could this happen to Live 105.3 here?

As id like to see a different format on KLLI(music perhaps?), I have a feeling that it prolly will be switched to an FM Sports Talker, as its usually cheaper to program and coordinate. The big question would be however, can Dallas handle three sports talkers?

With the change, Baltimore just went to four...WJZ 1300 (now all ESPN feed, formally WJFK), WVIE 1370 (the Fox Sports Radio affiliate), WNST 1570, and now WJZ-FM 105.7 "the Fan" (formally WHFS). Houston has 4 as well...KILT 610, KBME 790, KGOW 1560, and KFNC 97.5.

Both the CBS Free FM-to-sports converts (97.1 Detroit to WXYT-FM "97.1 the Ticket" and WJZ-FM) look to be like KTCK in that the shifts are all local morning through night. Detroit's move was to make a simulcast out of WXYT 1270 on FM. WXYT-AM/FM is the flagship for the Red Wings, Tigers, and Lions. In Baltimore, the new WJZ-FM has the rights to the O's. Most of the CBS-owned sports outlets in large markets seem to rely on local programming rather than network programming (WFAN, WIP, KILT, the two FM sports outlets, etc.).

As I posted a while back, I still think they could flip 105.3 to sports. It already has the NASCAR rights; the sports on KRLD (evening sports talk and Rangers flagship status) could be moved over to 105.3. You could leave Ben and Skin middays. So, morning and afternoon drive is all that would need to be filled.

Other than Michael Irvin's show, KTCK is whipping KESN by 2:1 and 3:1 margins in the men 25-54 demo...
http://sportsmediablog.dallasnews.com/archives/2008/10/radio-ratings-mano-e-mano-no-s.html (I'm sure that last KESN one is a misprint...I would guess "0.3" rather than "3.0" for the 11-Midnight hour).

Since KESN will always be forced to clear some ESPN network programming, it will always be a secondary choice since people here want to talk about "our teams in our town" and not listen to a national feed talking about other teams in other towns or the endless hyping of what's coming on the ESPN corporate family of networks. A station all-local on a strong signal probably could immediately replace KESN as #2 in those ESPN hours right out the box. I suspect KESN also has some listeners because there is no alternative ... i.e. listeners can't pick up KTCK on its diminished signal in their office and can only get KESN. The 1310 signal is too weak now to pick up in the building I work in on the Dallas/Collin County line; 1700 doesn't work either; 104.1 is to weak as well; I don't have a HD radio for KPLX 99.5HD2's simulcast. I can get KESN on my office radio though...

Is there anyone using Fox Sports.
I think 1460 AM is running Fox Sports. (Current calls ??? This was the old WACO-AM of yore.) A distant rimshot at best, and perhaps an affiliate Fox wouldn't mind dumping if they could get full-stick DFW coverage. Then again, they were once on 1190 and that didn't last, either (and neither did forerunner KTRA-All Sports.)

I don't know how sports talk works in other cities, but The Ticket has made such a play to bring folks 'into their family' and bond with them and such over the years...and it's paid great dividends. The whole "P1" thing is to make the station more like a somewhat exclusive club of committed sports (and guy talk) fans. I don't think you can completely displace that with some other station. There is a fixed number of sports enthusiasts in the area, and they obviously choose KTCK. Some gravitate over to KESN for Galloway and for Mavs basketball, and another few probably tune in and out of KESN to avoid programming blocks they don't like at KTCK. But KESN ever emerging as a winner between the two stations? Doubt it, bless their hearts. I'd guess there's enough sports enthusiast/listeners in this area to support 1.5 stations...not 2, and surely not 3 or 4. 105's calling card would be a full FM stick in stereo, and perhaps having some latitude to program edgier talent that KESN/ESPN wouldn't normally put on their airwaves. 105 already has NASCAR, and as others said, could easily have the Rangers, and perhaps the Cowboys as well. The Ticket is going to become vulnerable very soon, with Cumulus' major cutbacks...I'd fully expect to see any overpaid second bananas getting the ax in the next few weeks, and $6 an hour board ops moving into key speaking roles on some talk shows.

Of course, THIS would be the time that you pull your PD from KLLI/KRLD and put in someone with real SPORTS and TALK chops that could do something to make an immediate dent in the Ticket's listenership.

No, I don't think 105.7 should change format. I'm not in their target demo or psyche-graphic, but I sometimes enjoy the soulful sounds. Rickey Smiley is quite a character too. I miss Jack Hines doing news in the mornings.
If any station would be better off going all sports, or partial sports, it would be that station on 105.3...

As for me, when I want sports news NOW I frequent ESPN. If I want small talk that is non sports related as a rule, I go to The Ticket. Both serve a useful purpose.

The only time I listen to Live 105 is during the races.

If KLLI pulled over a couple of entertaining, yet knowledgable sports host for AM/PM drive(greggo as example), not to mention keeping B&S in place you'd have it covered. Also, if they went after the cowboys, not to mention moving/simulcasting both them and the rangers, not to mention put in great managment(read: not gavin spittle) I could see this happening.

Rickey Smiley is on 97.9 The Beat. This thread is about 105.7 in Baltimore going all sports. The original poster wanted to know if CBS would make one of their FM signals an FM sports/talk station.

Thanks, Jed, I guess I ought to read more than the heading when I post.
A friend really digs Ricky Smiley, I guess I shoulda asked what station he's on.
If CBS had any smarts, they'd do some outreach and research and find out what boys 18-24 want to hear, and go after them. Is it sports? Darned if I know. The teenagers I know listen to oldies and classic rock.
