Live 105: What A Shame

What a shame. The last broadcast for Howard Stern on Live 105 this morning, and they couldn't come up with CDs that wouldn't skip throughout Robin and Howard's speeches.

You think that they could have prepared just a little better, but this is embarrassing. The fans that stuck with this station through the Stern Era deserved better. You could have spent an extra buck on some quality discs, but no.

Shame on you.

From reading the mailbag at DCRTV.com, it seems like they had the same problem there during the speaches, so it sound like it might have been the dump button more than KITS cd's.

Wow, that is a pretty big screw up! 93.7 here in Sacatomatoes aired the show as well. I only heard about 10 minutes of it, but it sounded like a really nice tribute.

So how long do you think it will be before Howard comes back to terrestrial radio?
______________

Good point!

Live might have had there own dump button in use too, adding to the skipping effect.
______________

fairly obvious it was the dump button. unfortunate.

You're guessing, and you're wrong. This was good old CD-type stutter, happening in rat-a-tat fashion. Howard would say "Over here is my sister -- and over the years -- the sun is coming out..."

Which would tell me that somebody decided to (1) bleep out the name of Howard's sister, (2) a reference to one of the show writers and (3) a comment about the weather, all of which sound patently offensive.

Meanwhile, Daniel Carver went into a rant that included numerous shouts of the N-word, you could hear people yell the F-word during Tom Chiusano's speech, and Artie Lange's rant was left intact. Howard didn't swear, never used the term "Sirius" and wasn't bleeped when he talked about farting or other bodily functions.

The one thing I have to credit KITS for is that they never did use their own dump button on Stern.

I have heard several other stations around the country that treated Stern like the next team Terrell Ownens is going to play for. Bring us the numbers, don't f up. If you do, you are gone.

Live never edited the show, never tried to do funny bits on their own during the commercials, etc. They just ran the show. I always appreciated that.

DJ,

Ok, I hear ya, good point. I'm just surprised to hear that KITS would use CD or even mini CD to capture the Stern show for playback. Most stations use some type of digital reel to reel hard drive based recorder.

At any rate, unless someone from KITS comes forward, I guess we'll never know.
______________

I don't want to take away from your fun if you're just trying to bash a radio station because you hate them....

BUT

Even here in Chicago on WCKG there was the same problem. It's not CDs. WCKG is an Infinity station as well, and they don't DUMP on Howard locally, but there were lots of "dumps" and that "skipping" sound through the broadcast here as well.

I'm willing to bet money that it wasn't the local station there in SF or here, but Infinity corporate making that happen with a series of button pushing (dumping). A shame, but at this point if you're them they're thinking better safe than sorry.

Berd,

How did you make the leap from me complaining about a single broadcast to mean that I hate the station? Live 105 is one of the few corporate radio stations that I actually listen to these days.

That being said, it sounds like the satellite feed from New York may have been the source of the audio errors, since the same "skipping" problem was reported in other markets.

My initial reaction was that the problem was CD-related because (1) that was exactly what it sounded like, and (2) Greg Gorey (sp?) at Live 105 had mentioned on several occasions that the Stern show was recorded onto CD and re-broadcast by the station. This came up once because a show segment ran long and the CD maxed out...

we didnt usually use cds for stern, but that particular show however.. the server had crashed that morning and the show would not load into the database ... if a show was to air at all it had to be on CD.... sorry if it skipped, it was most likely the crap cd player that skips on almost everything....

Wow. The Doppler Effect as it pertains to posts on Radio-Info.com. As timely as today's headlines!

Could somebody go back to my post from last September about KEAR/106.9 and respond regarding when they think Infinity will take over the station, and what the format will be?

Hey, they're just discussing the only thing that's happened at Live 105 since December.

She left? Where did she go? No one had any post about it to my knowledge when it happened...

That's MISTER A-hole to you, sweetheart. :-*

And you shouldn't have felt the need to defend yourself. We've moved on.

But I enjoyed the "exxcccuuuuse me" reference. Straight out of SNL, Circa 1979. Again, as timely as last month's headlines!

What, Ally leaving after 8 years in middays doesn't count?

yeah, it might. when did she leave?

Ally left in mid-May. She and her husband bought a farm outside of Pittsburgh. Literally -- this is not a euphemism for something bad happening to them.

Kat from Channel 104-9 joined Live 105 to help out.
