Hi, how is everybody on this board today? Which is about 1 or 2 of you? Anyway, my topic and rant is about Internet Radio and the frustrations of this latest broadcast technology.
I stream my own radio station like most or half of you that tune to this board. I believe that if it's any potential of competition to satellite or the rest of the IPOD's....it's the Internet streamers. Especially once it gets to wireless WIFI's around the nation.

Now the downside, and that's to us streamers. We seem to be intimidated by royalties, or lack of bandwidth. But what irritates me the most is the hosting for us streamers. LIVE 365 for example. They constantly do IP or router and server switching which takes or cuts us Live streamers off the net.

I've been a constant victim of that, where everytime I start to build a steady audience....Surprise I'm not or haven't been on for a day or day's. It seems I'm not aloud to sleep in the middle of the night, or go on vacation without finding out you were temporarily or completely off the air or the net.

Not only is it frustrating for the streamer, but what about the steady listener who might think that your gone for good. He picks his favorite stations, only to find out it's gone. It doesn't give a good reputation to internet radio or Live 365 for instance.

If it's any wide selection of programming of formats, it's all on the net. More then satellite, and IPODs. There's good and bad. and that's what makes it interesting. It's hard running a station with worrying about the RIAA, BMI etc. but when you can't depend on your host...who else can you depend on. I'm sick of it.

There's as much to discuss about the Internet stations or more, then posting about the same old terrestrial CC stations that you see and read everyday. It's starting to get really redundant. How many times can you read I hope this flips to this and that flips to that. Or some guy getting sarcastic or ranting of a replacement of a PD or air personality, like he's at the ball game rooting or yelling at his team. C'mon. Plus speculating on a station with a 200 watt signal at the top of the dial trying to change things around for the better when it's been dying a slow steady death.

When I stream, I try to sound as professional as I can, and if I can make money, what's wrong with that too. But Live 365 that I patronize, seems to discourage streamers, more then encourage them.
Especially when I broadcast live, I end up becoming affected due to the lack of QOS. No warning telling people that when or where or why there will be an outage. And I have to fight to get credit. Who wants to continue to pay for this crap and when you can't transmit consistently.

Broadcasting as an archive all the time will turn listeners off. Many of them can tell the difference. It seems like broadcasting and sounding like a CD changer with the flat sound is LIve 365's image. I call it boring. I don't care to become like that. But it seems if you stream live all the time with them, your going to run into outage problems. And when you can't keep a live audience consistently, it's only going to hold Internet streaming behind.

Yes they pay the royalties....but if you can't stay on, what's the sense. Any other streamers share the Live 365 blues?

why not invest in moving away from Live365 and running your own server where you control your uptime?<P ID="signature">______________

While I agree the recent tech dificulties with Live365 sucks I have built a decent audience rather quickly in my two years of taking my net station serious. 1 year ago with Live365 I had monthly TLH of under 5000, today I'm above 21000 and continue to see growth. There are other alternatives out there that will enable you to have more control over your content but you will have to pay two different companies rather than one (LoudCity or SWCast.net for royalties and whoever you use for streaming services(viastreaming.com is good)). If your TLH is low and you are dissatisfied with Live365 then I would suggest moving to one other their servers. No matter where you go it takes more than just putting the stream on, it takes alot of work, knowledge, and a bit of luck. Oh yeah, promote, promote, promote.

Thanks for the tip. I've been only off and on for a short time since last August, but I been beseiged with eithier software problems or Live 365. I managed to collect 63 pre-sets but has been a slower rate then my AC/standards I used to have.
I run a classic soul hit music station, and I sound as professional as anything else on the 5000 stations plus that are on live 365. I have a top notch library
and I don't sound like a dull CD changer. But I don't understand is how some of these other dull stations continue to be found and collect the monstrous hours I hope to collect myself.
Would I like to know is what kind of hard work and knowledge did you put in to get where you got to. What kind of promotion did you do?

1st invest in your station with the best software you can afford. I use http://www.stationplaylist.com for the automation and scheduling software, it was cheaper when I first bought it but its still well worth the money. Secondly, buy simple cast if you are not using SAM, its much more stable and powerful than Live365's streaming tools. These two things will make a huge difference.

My knowlege comes from my time as music director at WSTO/Evansville, IN. I have basically taken the same forumla we had there and tweaked it to fit today rather than the 90s. Which has created a slightly unique CHR station.

Also get a professional voice over/imaging person to do your stations liners etc. I started out with Mike Hansen and have moved on to Fish from radioimaging.com.

Promotion wise I have a myspace.com page as well as a website that drives some traffic. Also find the most exposure for your station in Live365's directory. With the weighted ratings this is critical to have your station positioned correctly. With the other services it really doesn't matter.

I also have personality on my station with myself and Tony Lorino being on the air daily from 10a-4p on the east and plan to add one additional air personality before spring.

Good luck.

I am currently broadcasting as we speak 24/7. And pretty much were on the same page with just a few questions to ask.

First of all I have Station Playlist out of New Zealand. I plan later to put the voice tracking on to it.
But what is simple cast? What does it do? What kind of streaming tools does it have?

I'm Classic Soul. I have set my formula format on there with a few rotations.

I did that before I went on broadcasting. I hired someone from radio Voice 123.

You read my mind, I was thinking of doing that. I need to find some black chat or promo web pages, since they are my primary audience.
What do you mean by finding the right station positioning. I found a good one as far as genre, which was classic soul. But I got bumped down the list due to other stations deciding to jump on there that as far as their programming goes, they don't even belong on there. One guy is a jazz station with maybe some R&B oldies thrown in. You explain those guys.

I could go on the air live....but decided to stay automated for now. That's the beauty of the Internet and automation. But I'm always updating practically everyday.

Re: Also I would Like To Add......

Hi everyone:

> What steps or how did you get station linked to My Space.

The process is simple. You just open an account and build your page. Once that's done, you simply link it to your station and website.

Hope this helps :)

Cheers for now :)

Hey let me ask, how did you connect or link my space with your web site.

You just simply put a link to your Web site in one of your "blurbs" on MySpace. If you're logged in to MySpace, click on "Home", then "Edit Profile" and under "Interests & Personality", edit one of the sections. You'll need to know some basic HTML (the language used to make Web pages).

As far as HTML knowledge...do you mean a code for part of the linkage?
