Live 5 Plus

WCSC (CBS) in Charleston is adding a 2nd channel starting on Monday. It will be called Live 5 Plus. The channel has gotten some wide distribution, as it'll be on over the air on WCSC-TV channel 5.2, and on Comcast Cable channel 212 and Knology Cable channel 146.

Some good programs are on the channel, including Who Wants to be a Millionaire? and The Insider.

Here is the weekday schedule for the new Live 5+:

What do you think about it?

That's a pretty lame attempt. I'm frankly surprised WCSC couldn't do better than that.

Gotta agree, pretty lame. I would hope WCSC would go more raw news, weather and sports. Hopefully that is the long-term idea and this is just a way to fill the space... and to remove some programs from potential competition on other stations. I could easily see them doing a 10p newscast on this.

They already do a 10pm newscast on FOX 24/WTAT-TV

So far from talking to a lot of friends and general public the RTN Network which plays on channels like 63.3 in Columbia and 6.2 August seems to be well liked and watched quit often. Is there a channel that plays it in Charleston I haven't heard of one? Looks like Channel 5 wants to do their own thing and I guess you have to start somewhere. I have quit asking questions like if I lived in Charleston and didn't have RTN calling any of the stations there to ask about it would only give some lame excuse and I have heard plenty enough of that over the years. I remember about eight years ago I think it was Directv or maybe Dish I don't remember which one decided to remove The Weather Channel from their basic programming lineup in favor of something else. I called and talked to someone about it saying that I thought it a bad idea and was told that they didn't believe that there were very many people who watched The Weather Channel and that I was mistaken, anyway when the channel was removed needless to say they were swamped with phone calls and almost impossible to reach for nearly 2 weeks which was how long it took them to return The Weather Channel to their basic packages. You never know what people may like for sure without trying something and working with it to make it better as you go along and channel 5 probly as this on their mind to start with.

WLCN 18 has it, but it is hampered by a weak signal, coming from Summerville, and it continuously plays on a subchannel. 18.1 has lots of local news, weather and sports, along with local programming. 18.2 is RTN, and 18.3 is a weather channel.

The real problem with WLCN is that it is not on Comcast... and probably never will be. Previous ownership left such a sour taste in Comcast's local management's mouth that they have built a stone wall between themselves and WLCN. Maybe Faith Assembly (current owners) can soothe old frayed nerves but as of now - there is no way LCN will ever be a player in the Charleston market.

The station has started, and they are becoming a pretty decent place for lots of good programming. They already have run three or four CBS and Raycom basketball games not cleared on regular WCSC, air re-airs of their local news, and they have aired several "State of the City" addresses that used to only air online.

Soon, they are actually starting a debate show with Bill Sharpe, as they plan to ramp up their original programming.

WLCN is now on Comcast (Charleston) channel 230 as of March 19, 2010
