The objective of Live 8 is to relieve the debt of African countries. What was the objective of Hands Across America?

What I remember from Live Aid is 92.3 K-Rock. New York's home for rock and roll. They dropped their top 40 format and kicked of Album Rock with a live broadcast of Live Aid.

And Dan Ingram on July 3 had just celebrated his NY anniversary on his afternoon show.
