In 1993, Mario and Luigi graced the silver screen in the infamous Super Mario Bros. live-action film. The movie bombed and was attacked harshly by critics, and Nintendo has stayed away from live-action ever since. But it seems they’ve put all that behind them: Netflix is producing a live-action Zelda TV series for their online video service.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Nintendo and Netflix are working together closely on the project to bring the beloved The Legend of Zelda series to life. Described as Game of Thrones for families, the show will follow Link as he tries to save Princess Zelda from Ganon.
The live-action Zelda show is still in the earliest stages of development; a writer is still needed, in fact. Therefore, no release date can be set, and it’s still entirely possible the idea will be canned before seeing the light of day. I’m sure fans everywhere will pray in earnest for that not to happen — or else there will be no end to the “excuse me, princess!” chorus.
