LIVE REQUEST SHOWS ON THE WEEKEND IN PORTLAND, MAINE

While most radio stations in many markets are only "live" on Saturday nights with a network/satellite show, Portland, Maine is different with two "live", and more importantly, "request" shows. The Hot AC station Coast 931 hosts a show called "Excellent 80s Adventure" with the night guy Mike Worley. On the country side of things, I would assume he is part-time as I have only heard him on the weekends and occasional fill-in shifts, Brian Michaels hosts "The All Request Saturday Night Party." JBQ airs "Open House Party" which is national anyhow so there is no local connection there to the Portland market.

The question I have - between Coast & WPOR, which jock/show do you think is more listener interactive? Personally, I think Brian may chit-chat too much between songs but overall is very in tune with the audience airing a ton of phoners and giving away CDs and tickets to some concerts. Mike, on the other hand, sounds to be more music intensive where he doesn't air as many calls. Brian "sounds" LIVE while Mike's show occasionally is off with the "live" vibe (if there is such a thing).

I guess I am just curious to see who you think is better with the audience. Mike is full-time so you would assume he would be a more solid jock. My vote goes to Brian for hosting (and saying occasionally) that his show is the most interactive.

What do you think?

How can you compare two different jocks with 2 different formats?

If Brian and Mike know their music & relate to their listeners---WHY MAKE LIVE WEEKEND RADIO A COMPETITION?

What Portland and other markets need is more of it! :-*

Both are very competent jocks with very different approaches. I agree with Argy, no need to make a war, especially between two different formats that reside in the same building. Kudos to Saga for actually paying to have live jocks on a Saturday night. Based on the local spot load I've heard, I'd say it's paying off.

OHP can be produced to sound very local. I'll bet most JBQ listeners believe that John is in Portland, not in Southborough/Falmouth/Cabot.

People have thought that many, many times. We've even had a time or two where people would call up wanting to come down to the studio on Saturday because of the artist they heard that would be in the OHP studio that weekend. OHP pulls that off well.

And by the way, the new Sunday night OHP jock is Kannon, the-jock-formerly-known-as Mike Castano who did nights for several years on the Q before Rob Steele came back.

I just want to tune in long enough to note: it's great a small market like Portland has compelling radio on not one, but three signals...and three different major formats. Trust me, it's a good thing.
