Lloyd out at Route 81

B

From RBR and a friend---Lloyd Roach is out as CEO of privately-held Route 81 Radio. Ira Rosenblatt assumes control of the company, which owns 12 stations.

I hear thru the vine that WHYL is listed w/a West Coast broker, and still there is no new transmitter site lined up for that wide-spaced 2-tower DA, needing 13 acres in a hot business land market.

I'll stop there. My lawyer's not that good.

Cheers!

Moving the towers (or possibly the market itself) would require a new radial pattern, hence the spacing and land requirements all change. You can't really judge it on the current spacing and axis.
______________

I guess he spent too much time on Radio-Info.com pimping his stations! Fired for Internet abuse!

Having gotten to listen to WHYL recently now that I live in Carlisle, I have to admit that I like the sound. The imaging (Sam? Mak?), especially on Scott Donato's morning show, is fresh. The topics on Scott's show aren't bad. The all-day sound doesn't drop off too much, though stale afternoon news updates ("yesterday morning"? no more current news other than Patriot-News rip and read?) sound a tad jarring. And there seems to be a solid local spot load. Also had a chance to hit the studios for my full-time gig a couple weeks ago and saw they're nicely equipped, too.

In other words ... a solid local operation. I hope they stay afloat. Of course, the ad revenues will tell the story.

(No, I am not related to Mak or Sam in any way, and I'm definitely not Lloyd Roach.)

I vacuum and fetch coffee for people. Pretty soon I'll be up to copier duty. I heard a rumor that one day I'll even get to see the production room...hopefully within a few years I'll make it to the AM broadcast studio.
______________

Good to see that the kick-a-guy-when-he's-down mentality lives on my old board.

Who will you have to kick now that Lloyd's gone?

I have no personal issue with Lloyd.

I will say, however, that it was rather obvious he was pimping his stations. Can't take a tongue-in-cheek comment, Joe?

Good luck to the guy. I hope his next gig is more successful than this one. At least he cashed out nicely on WCOJ when he sold it to Route 81.

Then why bother with the post?

If I owned a bunch of stations you'd be damned well assured that I'd be pimping them.

>Can't take a tongue-in-cheek comment, Joe?

Sure, I get 'em all the time. I just asked a question and made an observation.

It's funny because I enjoyed working for both Lloyd and Ron Roy, the other popular target of ex-employees on this board, and it amazes me in an industry where you are constantly running into former bosses and co-workers, there are some among us who don't get the idea of; "If you can't say something nice. Don't say anything at all."

Boy, you sure are informative. More sucessful than this one? How many stations have you owned? How much did he cash out for? Are you hiring because I have a friend who does some voice over stuff? Since you have no personal issues what's the deal? Do you just like to crap on people? I'm sure there is a web site where you can find people who will let you do that sort of thing. Maybe you thought you were toung in cheek? I hope you are as tonge in cheek if you ever lose your job.

I'm glad to see that Lloyd's defenders are here to nip at my nuts.

I made one comment: It's been evident since Day 1 that the guy posted here under anonymous handles in an effort to "promote" his stations. He did this on many boards, then attacked people who called him out on it. And he frequently changed his handles in an attempt to try to seem coy, but it didn't work since the evidence was still left behind.

If he had admitted who he was? Great. In fact, I would have admired him for being direct with the public and seeking feedback. Instead his "I just moved to (insert name of town with Route 81 property) with my 44-year-old wife and we both LOVE the (programming on Route 81 station in said town)!" schtick was old.

So now that I've made a statement, I get people like you who attack me when I make a legit point -- that "advertising" your radio station solely through Radio-Info.com is one of the stupidest things I've ever heard of.

Please, we all have more important things to do -- well, I do, anyway. I have a job that requires me to work (at least) 40-hour weeks; no, it's not at the local drive-thru. Maybe you don't; I don't know and it's none of my business. But if you and Joe want to spend your free time trying to bait someone into an argument with ad hominems, do it with someone else.

Wait, wait wait. You said some things that I thought would be interesting if they were answered. You made more than one comment. What you said was:

>Good luck to the guy. I hope his next gig is more successful than this one. At least he cashed out nicely on WCOJ when he sold it to Route 81.

My question of being more successful was directed to you because it seemed to be mean-spirited. Any individual having a dream and making it come true is successful to me. If it wasn't meant to be mean-spirited then my bad.

> If he had admitted who he was? Great. In fact, I would have

Most people here don't admit who they are unlike you and I.

That was your point? I read:

>"I guess he spent too much time on Radio-Info.com pimping his stations!"

"Advertising you radio stations".....etc is a completely different statement. More concise, insightful and informative.

Then why bring it up? And who cares where you work. Gainful employment to feed yourself and your family is never something to be ashamed of.

I'm not looking for an argument. You made statements. I asked for answers. If you don't want to answer then it's up to you but If you know how much he "cashed out for" I'd like to know.

I seem to recall $750,000 as the WCOJ price tag---now how much of that was cash and how much was stock or whatever, I don't know.

For the record, RobertH was once morning show host, program director and news director of WCOJ, Coatesville. He quit after a phone conversation with Lloyd Roach so heated (and reportedly not the first heated exchanged between the two) that he broke the newsroom telephone he was using and, like Elvis, left the building. He took up fixing BMW's for a couple of years and then returned demoted as morning news reader and host of late afternoon talk show. During the interim, WCOJ had at least three different morning news readers and two different PDs. Talkinthewalk has since become the PD and morning show host.

Reportedly, Lloyd Roach mortgaged his house to purchase WCOJ from Suburban Cable. WCOJ was his equity investment in Route 81. Route 81 now owns the license for WCOJ. Lloyd Roach retains his stock in Route 81 and remains listed on the Route 81 website as a member of its board of directors. At last report, he also retained his mortgage.

A great many people have worked for Lloyd Roach. I have worked with a fair number of them. Many did not appreciate how Lloyd Roach treated them. Many did not respect him as a manager. Most any market I've gone to has at least one capricious station owner or manager who has become the subject of radio "war stories." passed on by former employees and people who have known former employees. Apparently Lloyd Roach fills that role around here.

Some people in radio apparently believe one "should speak no ill" of radio or anyone in radio. Others have integrity.

And some, when they hear something they don't want to hear, attack the messenger or the messenger's motives rather than responding to the substance of the message.

"Now's the time to say goodnight..."

I am a former employee (I was there, not in the building, when Robert H had his big, final, blow up). Yes sir, the station was owned and operated by a reasonable, rational man.

I used to love it when he'd come in, run to the closet and proceed to yell and scream while he rearranged the microphone cables in the remote kits. He did this regularly.

His sales seminars were priceless, like a time capsule of what worked 30 years ago but had little relevance in today's business arena.

An out-of-state consultant became our new God. His input changed things, not for better or worse, but changed things for the sake of changing things. Looks like he had quite an impact on the station and the group.

I’ve worked in smaller and larger markets and never met anyone who yelled, screamed and generally raised his voice so many times as the former owner.

Soon, Rt. 81 employees will post to tell me how horrible it is to have an opinion that is not nice. This man bought and paid for his bad publicity, he's finally getting his money's worth.

Quick correction. I was never the PD. I am currently News Director. When I quit, Lloyd and I did not have a heated exchange. We weren't even on the phone we were at the station. Lloyd understood the reasons for my leaving and there were no hard feelings. That the facts. There had been heated exchanges between us befort though. Thats true.

Response to substance of message.

Never had a big blow-up and quit. In fact, the morning news man and I (by coincidence) resigned our positions on the same day for different reasons. Didn't break a phone, didn't kick and scream. Now in years previous I won't deny there were some screaming matches but not that day.

Re: "Now's the time to say goodnight..."

After reading these numerous posts, I must respond with a Billy Connally quote from "Still Crazy:"

"In an uncertain world, it's nice to know some things never change."
