So I'm sitting there spinning the dial in my Albany office this evening when I come across some content that's not normally heard on the air: classic Sam Kinison being broadcast on 97.5. I sat in and listened for a bit and sure enough it's that damned WNGN translator in Albany that only rebroadcasts static half the time since it cant get the signal from the parent station. Only had to listen about 90 seconds before the f-bombs and the c-word started flying. Good 'ol Kinison sure had a dirty mouth but he was funny as hell and it was even funnier hearing it over a god-squad repeater. Almost like karma. Turns out it was programming from Sirius or XM satellite radio channel 104, so somebody must have been parked near the receiver used to get WNGN's off-air signal. This went on for about 40 minutes before the signal went back to the usual static and tropo-scatter noise.
Doesn't it cost money to operate these translators? You would think they'd be set up to actually relay a broadcast instead of just taking up the channel for no real purpose - well outside WNGN's 60dbu contour no less. I know the 106.1 translator in Troy is just as unlistenable as 97.5. Next time I'll be recording and forwarding to the FCC.
