Being quite bored I traveled to Evansville to watch the debut of local 7.
I recall 7 buying a classic film package at least 3 decades ago., I suggested they place this package on air on a translator at one point and was told the ratings would be less than spectacular and was somewhat scolded for the stupid idea.
40 is the new 30? Stupid is the new Cool as Channel 7 rolls out the classic vault of films as their prime time programming for the Evansville market.
While everyone else carryed soaps or current programming Channel 7 was running Black and White film possibly transferred to video in house. John Wayne was leading the Cavalry fightin' indians. The only thing more dramatic than The Duke was the pronounced cats whiskers diving through the screen in HD!
While everyone else was prepping for news and broadcasting breaking stories (like the opening of ellis park) Channel 7 was running The Amazing Paint Zoom hour long infomercial. The lady kept doing a McCauley Caulkin hands on face "i can't believe it" every time the worthless piece of Malaysian junk sprayed paint on a wall.
While Network News dominated the network affiliates, and urban programming dominated MyNetworkTV (on in Evansville with a test pattern displayed in place of local breaks as there is no affiliate (HINT 7, just a stinkin HINT) and programming aimed at 12 year olds dominated CW19 (ANOTHER HINT 7) our old favorite Judge Jusy set the stage for prime time.
Indianapolis had Chuck Marlow on Channel 4. Evansville has Randy Moore.
The Local 7 crew dresses for golf as everyone wears polo shirts. It is different. If a church cult approached me in an airport with flowers and pamphlets I would have the same reaction after leaving the group and seeing Channel 7 News. The cult followers are doing the news! It is stylish in a Deeter Sprockets SNL kind of way. Different and a way to identify. This may not be new as I recall this 2 decades before.
Because the yock was from 7 Channel 14 is reacting??? 14 is using on their website tapes Jeff Lyons found when he inherited Yocks desk on the internet. Stripping to a raw 1970's bathing suit with clearly no tan lines, or tan, might cause heart failure or stomach failure there in front of God and everybody.
The other oddity? Promos with Fox 44 and CBS 44 logos in breaks on CBS and Fox. Bet the network boys don't know this is happening. Cross promotion of a competing network with both tied to the same sponsor is something I have NEVER seen before. Maybe CBS would want another location if they knew. If it were a single promo or prior event which had been made prior tot he switch I could understand. There are MANY events carrying the same dual branding on both 44.1 and 44.2. This doesn't seem smart given the branding required. It also opens the wound many know of that the HD2 is worthless so we need to include the HD2 on HD1 so it will have value.
Apparently DISH TV has not been agreeable to carrying 44,1 AND 44.2 as promos during breaks indicate DISH has thrown listeners under the bus on all FOX programming and the viewer should switch to DIRECT or one of three cable affiliates to get GLEE (might remove this from the list unless the Deliverance audience is targeted), NFL, American Idol, and any other program Fox carries. This makes it seem the sat carrier has done something wrong or evil and attempts to get all their subscribers to dumo them. Again, 44 is showing HD2 is worthless.
Then, we wrap the matter with a poorly produced promo that makes it seem the loss of Fax and rejoining of Fox by 44 is akin to the second coming of Jesus. I believe in Jesus and the seeming comparison can't be something just I see. It is either crass or just lack of intelligence in the way it is presented. You decide. This promo is on both WEVV 44.1 and WEVV 44.2. If other markets are homogenizing their dual affiliation this might be a good discussion topic of what not to do also.
"In the great heritage of WEVV we used to be FOX" (except we lost it because Fox was under performing and we thought we done right by stealin CBS from 25) Show old searchlight logo and leg shot of BethAnn Patmethis,"Now Jesus, I mean Fox, is back on WEVV". The lack of authenticity, production values, and original content leave a bad taste. The promo is on both 44.1 and 44.2. Why would anyone on 44.1 CBS care? Is no one watching 44.2 so they need to tell the CBS viewers that they have Fox back? Is the need to get the revenue of 7 so great that it requires the 44.1 audience and 44.2 audience?
Hang on, Judge Judy is on again on Channel 7.....
