Local Agencies waste of time or not

Not if....you have a good working relationship with them, no matter where you are.

When I was working in radio in North Florida I did my best to maintain relationships with a lot of agencies, both local and national. The station wasn't rolling in money, but the billing did increase, and the station mortgage paid off, while I was there.

But it doesn't happen overnight, especially with local agencies. They have to see value in what you do. Being a salesman with an order pad in your hand won't get you very far.

Local agencies are mostly awful. They bring zero to the table. No creative, slow to respond to any communiques, mostly burnt out or fired station reps who keep a client on the hook by being a blocker to the hundreds of new, know-nothing, obnoxious, give-the-rest-of-us-a bad name, "marketing consultants". Farnham and Galey are good, Marketing Services is good, but most ALL of the others can only, very neatly push a graphic around on Quark Express. Totally useless.

Have to agree with you Farnham & Galey,Marketing Services are pretty good folks. The rest well are like you say useless, I can't stand it when some think they know radio but have never worked in it a day in thier lives then they try to guide the client.

So who do you think the bad ones are?

Years ago, a local restaurant owner in Charlotte, NC decided to save a little $$$, chuck his agency and "speak sincerely and directly to the people". The spot sounded pretty good except for the tag line which an agency would have recognized as having no place in a restaurant spot:

"I guarentee that once you eat at my restaurant, you will be a regular."
:D

It aired once.
