Local Broadcaster Andrew Anthony "Andy B" Bonillas Dies

This is sad, sad news. Andy B was a great guy. Generous, kind and great to work with. I am saddened to hear about his passing. Rest well, bro. Glad I had the chance to know you.

No recollection of Andy at Power 97.1 or maybe you mean Power 97.5. But he did spend much of his career at Hot 98.3 doing afternoons back in the late 90's before his move to KXEW.

No doubt that ANYBODY who ever met or came in contact with Andy had anything but nice things to say about him. Truly a gentle, kind and caring individual who absolutely LOVED radio and anything to do with music. I remember the days of working with him and teasing him that the 'B' in Andy B stood for "Beast" because he was the complete opposite of that. If you were ever around him, you knew that his mom and his family came first in his life. While working with him 10 years ago, I thought this was a negative because he would miss an airshift if his mother needed something. With age, wisdom and a family of my own now, I realize that he had his priorities straight from day 1. This more than anything speaks volumes about Andy's character.

If you ever wanted to know ANYTHING about Tejano, Old School R&B, or Classic Rock, Andy was the man to ask! His collection and knowledge about all types of music was extensive. Like the article in the AZ Daily Star http://www.azstarnet.com/metro/187260.php mentioned, he was very soft spoken off the air, but once you got him in front of a mic, he became a star!

Just wanted to share my experiences that I'm glad that I was able to share with Andy. He really was a blessing to Tucson and its Hispanic/Latino/Chicano population and we just lost another link to our city's radio history.

Ok Gents........

Just to set the record straight, Andy started part time evolving to full time afternoons 3 - 7 PM. at KOHT. After Power 97.5 went off the air, some of their air staff came to KOHT...which evolved from "La Caliente de Tucson, Hot 98 FM" to "Hot 98. 3 The People's Station" in
which more Hip Hop and R & B was played. Anyways, some of the air staff went over to KXEW which evolved from "Radio Fiesta" to "Tejano 1600" and Andy B pretty much went over there playing what was played on KOHT before the hip hop change until he got sick.
It bums me out when such a young talent who was in touch with his listeners (AND HE WAS) dies of Cancer. It begs to pass it on....
Stay in Touch with your Doctors!! Get looked at, or at least get the dip-stick checked every once in a while. Nobody likes Cancer!

.........ok....nuff said at least for now......

Andy B, rest in peace

Andy B never "went over" to KXEW. The powers that be at CC moved him to KXEW so R-Dub could take his slot on HOT. The kind, good-natured soul Andy B was, it never upset nor frustrated him being juggled around. I will miss you so much. I can only strive to be as good-natured as he.

It was also pointed out to me that Andy got his start at the old 13 k-hit, way back in the day. I loved that station

I worked with Andy B some years back, and he was indeed a very nice guy. Always helpful, always smiling, always loyal...and you never heard him complaining.
I'm sad to hear the news of his passing. :'(
