Local Channel Power Output

Out of curiosity, I am wondering what is the transmission output for off the air signals for the local channels?

WFAA is the one I am most curious about since they are the only non-networked owned channel in the area. I am thinking their signal may be weaker than most because of the cash issues.

Thanks.

The FCC's database isn't up-to-date with the recent changes, but it appears WFAA is operating at 45 kW, which is reasonably strong for a VHF digital signal.

The strongest I've seen anywhere nearby is Tyler's KLTV, operating at 66 kW on channel 7. And although it takes a high-gain antenna, I regularly pick up KXII from 83 miles away, operating at 36 kW on channel 12.

Several folks are having issues with the channels that ended up on VHF (8, 11, and 52), particularly if they're using indoor antennas. Most indoor antennas have little or no gain on VHF. I've complained about this before: good VHF antennas are big, and no one wants to make a big indoor antenna.

A good VHF-Hi antenna doesn't have to be huge, and one can be made to fit indoors, but it'd be about three feet wide and probably wouldn't be pretty. Up to now few folks were likely to buy an ugly indoor antenna. But with more stations suffering from poor reception, perhaps that will change.

The FCC market maps still show WFAA with 30.0 kw but I'm reasonably sure that the actual facility is the 45.0 kw to which you refer. The others Vs in the market are KTVT/11 with 23.0 kw and KFWD/52 using 18.6 kw on RF-9. They have a CP to maximize to 55.0 kw.

Another high-power V is KSWO in the Lawton/Wichita Falls market using 138.0 (!) kw on RF-11. Yes, that's the same RF channel that KTVT is using. :) Anyone from Wise County with a report on the KTVT vs. KSWO signal battle?

I'd love to hear from someone to the south in say Waxahachie or Hillsboro on the fight between KFWD and KCEN on digital channel 9.
