Local Channels on DirecTV

I live in TV Market #28 Hartford/New Haven. (Who knows if that's the right number it's changed a few times). We're looking into getting DirecTV. Now for the town I live in it shows the local channels as being all the channels in the Hartford/New Haven Market except for WHPX/26 which is ION. The locals are WFSB/3 CBS, WTNH/8 ABC, WUVN/18 Univsion, WTXX 20 CW, CPTV/24 PBS, WVIT/30 NBC, WCTX/59 MNT, and WTIC/61 FOX. Now it shows we get these bonus local channels:

WNBC/4 NYC - NBC
WNYW/5 NYC - FOX
WJAR/10 Providence - NBC
WPRI/12 Providence - CBS

Now I don't mind getting out of market stations, but there's no bonus ABC Station and no Bonus CW Station. (on COX Cable we even get an extra CW Station as in WPIX/11 NYC). Another question. Why Providence for the #2 Bonus NBC Station. I'd much rather have WWLP/22 from Springfield, Mass as the #2 Bonus NBC Station. Springfield, Mass is much closer than Providence, Rhode Island. Also since there's no bonus ABC Station I'd pick WGGB/40 from Springfield or WABC from NYC. Since Springfield's CBS station is an LPTV station run by the Hartford CBS station I'd rather have NYC than Providence as my Bonus CBS Station.

Southington, CT Type in any of these zipcodes: 06489, 06479, 06467, 06444.

Ummmm, I wouldn't question it Marc - I'd just quietly jump on it!! If true (and not a typo) it seems like an awfully good deal, even if you only do get just one ABC affiliate. It's far better than you'd EVER get from Cox!

For what it's worth..

Dish Network has a 61.5 satellite with mostly international channels and some religious networks... They also have... one set of local stations on that dish, and they're all from the Providence, RI area. My guess? Maybe these Providence stations have mutual agreements or understandings with providers allowing them to be carried in markets that need out of market coverage. (Strange thing this is, in your case though, as you're getting them as bonuses for only some networks and not all of them, and you get some same-network affiliation stations from within your own market as well, correct?) All in all, a unique situation for you it sounds like. I would just take what you get and enjoy the extra network affiliations. (Worst-case scenario, if your local station pre-empts programming for something you might not want to watch, well... you have an alternate for network programming so there you go. :)

Why doesn't Direct TV carry my local TV stations.  We can get the Montgomery Alabama stations on Dish Network but why not on Direct TV?

Something smells fishy to me.  Me thinks that Dish Network has brought out the rights to carry the locals for a time, which is keeping Direct from being able to carry them.

Maybe someone with more knowledge can help me out.  Personally I like Direct TV.  You get more variety and better tech support.

If you enter zip code 06489, click on New Haven county, you'll see the Neighboring NYC stations.

The trouble with that is that Southington is in Hartford County, and not New Haven County.

In fact, I'm not sure that any of the 06489 zip code lies in New Haven County. If it does, then that area would be in an adjacent section of Cheshire or Meriden and would almost certainly include only a very small piece of real estate. Different towns in New England tend to have different zip codes too. There normally isn't the overlap that you find in other parts of the country.

Right, and in Marc's original post he mentioned Providence local channels too. I definitely don't see those listed on the Directv website so I'm not sure where he got his information from.

DirecTV breaks their Local into Local channels down by market and would rather not get into tracking down every single market modification and grade B countour for all 200 odd markets in the nation. Those Providence and NY stations have successfully argued Significantly Viewed. Its spelled out on the DirecTV website.

Providence is significantly viewed in New London and Tolland counties, NY in the fringes of New Haven and lower Litchfield.
