Local DJ's vs Out of Market DJ's

This story in local Hampton Roads paper about local DJ's vs Out of Market is very intresting even though the station is not a CHR/Pop or RHY....96X is a Alternative station, but relates easily to the talk of being local and not local.

Now I have to say in terms of a tornado or serve weather, it is a good idea to be local and that would be something that Seacreast couldnt do. But I see the other side also...if a Out of Market is getting ratings then that is good 2. But stations are made to serve the local market also, out of market DJ's can serve a market.

So if a local area disaster happens...do you cut the national program and bring in one of your local guys to report it and keep him on the air until the disaster is over?

Depends on the situation, but if it's big enough, HELL yes. You'd be amazed how lazy most stations are when it comes to handling things like that. And it has NOTHING to do with having syndicated programming.

Even if it's a smaller event that doesn't warrant wall-to-wall coverage, you can still have local cut-ins or news breaks with updates. There is always room to do that stuff, and it should be a priority when the situation warrants it. People that aren't willing to get creative in presenting the info are simply using syndicated programming as an excuse to be lazy.
