Local Emergency Coverage

I must commend WJRZ last night for their coverage of the power outages across the Ocean County area. Being one of the only true area stations that was live, Spyder Maguire really did keep the listeners up to date by calling the Police and fire company. It was nice to be able to get updates via a battery powered radio.

Kudos to WJRZ.

I also heard Tommy G on NJ101.5 break in to say that RT 35 in Aberdeen was flooded and to avoid it then the traffic reporter followed it up in his next report. Tommy also took calls from people reporting a power outage in the Wall area ?? I was half asleep but I remember Tommy telling Kathryn to call JCPL. I agree it is important to have people man these stations at night instead of automation in case of emergency.

I am sure WJRZ did a good job and I miss Spyder in the morning but I live in the area and the first station I went to was a News/Talk station NJ101.5 and Tommy G was on top of it with live calls coming in. Stations who use automation at any time are doing a disservice to their communities so WJRZ and NJ 101.5 should be commended for staffing 24/7.<P ID="edit"><FONT class="small">Edited by Foxradio on 10/13/05 08:45 PM.</FONT></P>

Eric Johnson has you conditioned 2 Listen

The PD of NJ101.5 Eric Johnson has done a very smart move. He knows most shows at night in and around NJ are not local and are syndicayed or automated. Therefore he's conditioned you to tune right to NJ101.5 in the event of an emergency to get live and local info when your TV and power goes out and you're sitting in the dark without power with just your battery operated radio.

Here's what he does.

For the longest time he must have instructed Tommy G to say everytime he opens the mike " This is your live and local radio station late night NJ101.5 I'm Tommy G.
This is repeated so often that you will subconsciously turn on NJ101.5 in the event you need live and local news and info now. Smart move on PD Eric Johnsons part.
Syndicated shows like George Noory at night can't stop speaking about UFO's and start taking local calls here on Earth in an emergency or rough situation as quick or at all as stations who keep it local and live. A clear competetive edge for stations that stay live and local all the time.

I don't know who Tommy G is. In the part of the state I live
in you can't receive the Trenton radio station. Assuming
Tommy G is some sort of chat host or disk jockey, I don't
think that either person is the type who should be
responsible for providing the public with important emergency
information. If a station represents itself as being live and
local 24/7 they should have at least one newsperson available
to get the facts. Asking listeners to call the station doesn't
provide reliable information.

I have seen quite a few people disparage the Coast to Coast AM
show by referring to UFOs and the like. This clearly shows that
the person making the comment hasn't listened to the show. If
he or she did they would realize the wide range of topics
covered by George Noory and, on the weekends, Art Bell himself.
The shows are often science or medicine related. If that's not
your cup of tea, that's OK. But recognize the really great job
those hosts, as well as Ian Punnet, do. Those here who have
done talk shows know just how difficult it is to prepare for
and deliver a great interview...especially one that lasts
three hours and deals with subject matter with which you are
not already familiar.

Getting information out to the public

Harold I am in news and believe me you don't need a newsperson to relay vital information to the public. Even Howard Stern did it on 9/11.
Spyder on WJRZ or Tommy G on 1015 are professional broadcasters who can handle it. I'm sure the public is comforted knowing they are connected by a live human voice at night with live real time information. The public is also a great resource and those phone calls are priceless. Fox CNN ABC NBC CBS use calls from the public all the time !

I see you're a George Noory fan. The times I have listened to George Noory he had kooky guests on spewing out misinformation and nonsense science. He's just a shill for his guests books and websites.

Good local programs are the key to success

A good PD finds a talented talk show host and develops a good show not take the easy way out with syndication.

All those lazy PDs who carried Howard Stern and did not create their own talented successful local shows will be screwed in a few months when Stern goes to Sirius. The trend now is Sirius and XM are national and FM to survive will have to become very localized.

In the case of NJ101.5 if you look at all the counties they are rated in they are consistantly #1 kicking the butts of stations with syndicated programs. This proves local programs are better when you find and manage the right talent.

I'm sorry, but I have no choice but to NOT believe
you.

News..especially "vital" news, should pass through the
hands of a person experienced in sorting through information
to find that which is both accurate and relevant to the
public. That's the job of a news reporter trained for
the work, not a disk jockey or a silver-tongued talk
show host. (What are the backgrounds of the two "professional
broadcasters" you mentioned? I have heard neither of them
since I don't live in an area covered by those stations.)

The public can be a resource but should never..never..be
relied upon for information. None of the networks you
mention "use calls" from the public to substantiate
news information.

Your comment about George Noory and his guests is
interesting. You wrote, in part, about his "kooky
guests on spewing out misinformation and nonsense
science." I take it then that you have the expertise
to determine both that the guests are "kooky" and
the ability to determine what is or is not correct
information. You also know which science is "nonsense"
and which isn't? For instance, a medical doctor on
last night disputed the necessity of flu shots for
most people. Would he be "kooky?"

I invite readers to check out the Coast to Coast AM
Web site and look at the listing of past guests.
It includes a mix of alternative and non-alternative
thinkers and writers. Because you disagree with
someone doesn't make that person "kooky." A frequent
guest is Michio Kaku. He's a professor of astrophysics
at the City University of New York. Would he be "kooky?"

broadcast and print. I was both a news reporter
and news director in radio. I mention this only
to indicate that my comments are made from personal
experience as well as college preparation for the
career.

Hey Fox Ignore Harold he's having flash backs to his glory days of radio in the 40's when live bands were also playing in the studio and radio stations had a staff of 20 newspeople with him Harold as the powerful news director. He still in his pompous long winded response doesn't get the fact that any broadcaster can get vital info on the air. He know's very little about today's radio broadcasting climate and the proof is he listens to the King of Kooks George Noory.
It is apparent Harold is very out of touch with the here and now in radio. All news networks put eyewitnesses on the air and radio is no different. As for Noory the show is unlistenable.

I sense a bit of jealosy in your tone. Do you work
in the business? I suspect not since your comments
reveal a listener's attitude, not a broadcaster's.
You'll probably find that as you grow older, get a
driver's license, have a chance to talk with
adults, and work your way into the desireable
demographics that the world really doesn't center around
which music format and which jock are on which radio
station. And you might actually understand and appreciate
the discussions on Coast to Coast AM.
