wonder how long he will do both ends of the day?? according to omw, cc and other cluster owners have made it work in other markets. for details, see omw.

Suspect that with on-air personalties' salaries slashed these days, he might have been given a choice between a pay cut, or an additional shift at no extra compensation.

Not saying it is true, but I wouldn't be surprised.

What happened to Matt's syndication deal with Clear Channel? He mentioned it a couple of years ago during the rumored format flip on WKDD, which turned out to the be the ill fated Air America experiment on 1350..could this be his entry into the ''Clear Channel All Stars''?

As a former advertiser on 1350's web stream, I don't see how sandwiching Matt Patrick in the midst of right-wing talkers is going to help either WHLO or Matt Patrick.

WNIR has ruled local talk for nearly three decades, while WAKR has ruled local news for a heck of a lot longer.

And WTAM garners more than double the listeners of WHLO...which makes the duplication of Rush a baffler.

Having said that, I do agree with Speaker of Truth regarding Air America. I predict it won't be around much longer after its much-publicized departure of Randi Rhodes to rival progressive talk network Nova M, started by two of Air America's founders. AAR's two strongest talkers, Lionel and Thom Hartmann, were successful in syndication long before AAR and will have no problem finding listeners with another syndicator.

Down here in Columbus, we're not so gah-gah about Air America, either. WVKO's GM is looking into what to do about afternoon drive, and the local afternoon talk show "What's What with Mike Cole" is being moved back an hour to replace the former first hour of Rachel Maddow, now a simulcast of MSNBC's "Race for the White House." Mike Cole will now lead in most nights to Columbus Clippers baseball. (Do we have your attention, Vince Ing?) Air America may no longer air live weekdays on WVKO. But from day one, WVKO's promotional focus has been on the Jones Radio tribunal of Bill Press, Stephanie Miller and Ed Schultz (who made up Radio Free Ohio's original lineup with pre-AAR Hartmann and Lionel), along with local high school sports and now the Clippers.

Stephanie has already been to Columbus, Bill Press is coming next month, and Big Eddie is scheduled to be here in July. And I am sponsoring all three.

But I digress...

A mix of the best talkers available from both sides of the fence would make more sense for WHLO. Of course, I'm just an advertiser (a major one, I've been told by more than one source), but if I were in Keith Kennedy's position, I would follow an approach similar to other markets with a schedule like this:

6 a.m. to 9 a.m.--Bill Press (Jones Radio Networks, first carried on Radio Free Ohio)
9 a.m. to noon--Glenn Beck (Premiere)
Noon to 3 p.m.--Ed Schultz (Jones)
3 to 6 p.m.--Sean Hannity (Citadel/ABC)
6 to 7 p.m.--Dr. Dean Edell or some other service-oriented talker
7 to 10 p.m.--Stephanie Miller (Jones)
10 p.m. to 1 a.m.--Mark Levin (Citadel/ABC)

I know at least one account exec at CC who would be excited about selling a schedule like that.

Well, at least Akron got rid of Savage. Columbus got Savage when CC flipped 1230, and now those of us associated with WVKO await the first book with both WVKO and WYTS in place. This may prove interesting.

And if the Indians make the Columbus Clippers its newest farm team, we may provide an example of how to program a "Radio Free Ohio version 2.0" as it originally was presented--without Air America.

Matt is a good man, and will do a fantastic job in his new challenge. I look forward to hearing him.

Best,
JbC

PS to Matt: Kevin Denholm, Rick Allen, Lew Roberts and I missed you at the reunion last year, and my dad says "hello."

matt-welcome to the r-i boards. look forward to hearing you monday. btw, i own the house in jellytown that kk grew up in...lol.

btw, your style in anchoring the cutts spectacle was very similar to another local person who did pm drive on 640 after doing music on fm in mornings, eric hogue. very clear, very objective reporting and interview questions. kudos and best wishes.

Sean,

As a former advertiser on a web stream, we don't expect you to understand anything about radio programming on a completely different radio station with a format you personally don't like, operated by a company you clearly have issues with after they jettisoned progressive programming. The format went off air despite your support of buying dollar-a-holler web spots, not enough to keep the lights on.

As usual Sean, you missed the point. Pull up the webstream of WKDD. (where ads available for your purchase!!) You'll hear that Matt is ultra-conservative. His politics have leaned right since the mid 80s. Most days it's enough to make you puke.

Looking at ACTUAL numbers you'll see WHLO has been beating WNIR and WAKR in AM drive for several books. Midday’s has come extremely close with Beck nipping at Howies heels. IIRC, Rush on WHLO beats Rush on WTAM in the Akron and Canton books. That however, is not the point. Rush combined on WTAM and WHLO spank Professor Howard. Since Premiere Radio Networks sells the network inventory on a regional basis, they are able to use the combined numbers for a helluva rate card for Northeast Ohio. The Local sellers can do the same. (listen to Rush locally and on an out of state station, the "Network" inventory is different, thanks to the EDAS cards inside the Starguides which allow specific spots for specific stations)

Hannity on WHLO, like most of the stations on which he occupies PM drive, is underperforming when compared to the rest of the station. Phil Boyce should sit with Sean and force him to watch the Bill Murray movie "Groundhog Day", then look at him square in the face and say, that sir, sums up your show.

On the subject on 1350 Radio Free Ohio, it made page 287 of the Anti-Clear Channel book “Right of the Dial”. After an explanation of CC not having a significant number of Progressive stations, they follow with an entry on the launch Radio Free Ohio. Pretty funny stuff in a book that starts by declaring Howard Stern was a CC employee.

Johnboy/Matt - Will you two just use intercompany email from now on? gheese!!!!

John:

I just sponsored Stephanie Miller's appearance here in Columbus. I will be sponsoring Bill Press' appearance next month, and I will also be sponsoring Ed Schultz' appearance planned for July.

My spots were airing regularly on the broadcast signal--the same spots Clear Channel produced--on both the broadcast signal and webcast following Stephanie's appearance. The same will be true for both Bill Press and Big Eddie.

As for the ratings, WNIR has ruled the roost. Overall numbers (6 a.m. to midnight) show "The Talk of Akron" with more than double the listeners of WTAM and five times the listeners of WHLO based on the most recent Arbitrends.

While I wish Matt Patrick the best with the additional gig, WAKR (which failed with a talk format twice, the first time with Rush) will end up being the beneficiary. If, John, Matt is as ultraconservative as you say, he will eventually alienate the core demographic of WKDD listeners who don't share his views. But if he isn't, he will alienate the current WHLO listeners.

Not that this multi-tasking hasn't been tried in Columbus. Shaun Ireland co-hosted morning drive at Clear Channel's WLZT and did a talk show on weekends on WTVN before she was snatched by rival Sunny 95.

Oh, and let's not forget Bill Hall. He had a show during WAKR's first attempt at talk with Rush. Bill Hall was on morning drive when WHLO went news/talk. Anybody wonder what happened to Bill Hall?

It would not surprise me that Nick Anthony, Matt's former boss, would woo Matt over to the Rubber City Radio Group within a year to take over one of Tim Daugherty's shifts.

As for Hannity...If, as you also say, Phil Boyce should show Hannity "Groundhog Day" over and over, this should make his contract renegotiation rather interesting.

By the way, John...From what my former colleague Brady Russell says about you (we worked together at WCUE), I only wonder why you would use as a synonym the name of a recently retired talk show host from Lincoln, Nebraska?

I dunno Sean, ask my mother, She gave me the name.

You should contact someone at a station in the market (akron) and ask them for the numbers. Whatever you are looking at is incorrect, (unless you're looking at those 75+ numbers) my source for the numbers is sitting in the Rubber City building on West Market Street. They, as I, are scratching our heads over your statement of "Matt on WHLO will help WAKR". It's like saying the price of a postage stamp will bring down the high gas prices.

Your statement that WNIR has 5 times the listeners is also incorrect.

For example in AM drive in the fall book in the $$ demo.
WNIR was 14th
WHLO was 17th
WAKR was 22nd!

The Cume difference was less than 3000 between 100.1 and 640. So much for a 5 x higher.

WAKR beat WHLO in ONE daypart, nights. Indians/Cavs.

Do you just make this stuff up?

I'm speaking overall, John, which is posted right here on this website.

I'm beginning to agree with what my former colleague, Brady Russell, says about you.

This message is for Mr. Baylor.

Above you posted some ratings information from Arbitron. I think this is the reason Arbitron has problems with people posting data in-depth on blogs. First off you try to command a post yet fail to source any basics of the ratings you are discussing. I ran the AM drive in the Fall 2007 Akron survey and based on the $$$ demo you sourced. I am assuming adults 25-54. The rank positions you posted was incorrect. Basically the same order, wrong rank positions. You mention "cume" was only 3,000 different while actually one station was nearly double the cume of the next one ranked.

As for the statement about "looking at ACTUAL numbers" what does that mean? Your statements about AM drive and midday's with Glenn Beck are extremely wrong. Maybe you need to take an Arbitron tutorial or something.

Congrats on doing such a good job out of the gates that there's no drawing or quartering to be done!
