Local MyNet station now with new name

Last week, the Quad Cities' local My Network TV station changed it's ID from 'My TV 16' to 'My 8.3'. Now there's no mention of the call letters WBQD. Did the analog WBQD-LP go off the air? Also, my16.tv doesn't seem to be operational right now.

Speaking of which, I have my TV on 'SVU' right now-- or at least that show SHOULD be on right now...Is there any other station experiencing this technical difficulty?

According to the station's Wikipedia page, they're trying to find a digital channel for WBQD. So far, they're in analog. FCC records still show them as active.

Wonder why they just don't flash cut on ch. 26 and ditch analog. Does anyone even use analog anymore?

Do they ID as WBQD-LP at the top of the hour? That would be a clue.

Often, a low-power station simulcast on a full-power subchannel may ID as the subchannel, since reception is far better. WMLW-CA in Milwaukee, which is on low-power 41, promotes their OTA location as ch. 58.2, a subchannel of their full-power sister station.

It appears as if the channel in question is trying to get rid of the WBQD name. The new voice for the new ID says: "You are watching WQAD-TV My 8.3 - Moline, Davenport." There's also a new infomercial disclaimer using the new ID. However, the following from before are still being used:

1. Show promos that still use 'My TV 16'

2. "You are watching a special presentation of WQAD News 8 on My Network TV 16." (referring to 10pm repeats at 11:30pm)

I wonder if WQAD will produce a newscast for 'My 8.3' now...

They can't flashcut on Channel 26 because they're too close to KWKB (Iowa City), which broadcasts on Channel 25. I believe there is also something on Channel 27 somewhere within the Iowa/Illinois Border Area.

Actually, WBQD was a low-power station, so it shouldn't interfear with KWKB.

That said, looks like they are tampering with show promos. Now we can really say "Goodbye, My TV 16". It's now "My 8.3". Another change is that more local promos from WQAD are also on 8.3, such as anchors in localized versions of United Way commercials as well as news promos. Here's an idea: Move the 6:30pm newscast from ABC 8.1 to My 8.3 and call it 'My News 8.3 At 6:30'...

WBQD has a permit for a digital operation on channel 14, with 15 kilowatts. It includes a move to the channel 6/8/18 tower. The permit is valid until May of 2014.

From a technical standpoint they could potentially remap the channel 14 digital operation to 8.3. I have some question as to whether that's legal. (it would be if WBQD is commonly-owned with WQAD; I can't tell from the CDBS whether that's the case) But there are a fair number of incorrect remappings out there that aren't being prosecuted, and as long as no duplicate channels result, I doubt the FCC would be concerned.

I suspect the speculation that absolutely nobody is watching in analog is likely the case, and likely the reason.

Actually, there was supposed to be a channel 53 as of September 2001, but the owners of Fox 18 managed to block it. Now it's current CP is valid 'til July 2012. But the station plans to move to channel 8 since 53 is no longer an option. I think we might a duplicate channel should it ever sign on the air...

Assuming the new station is built someday, it will be virtual channel 53 -- you'll punch in 53 on your remote to watch it.

In other words, there's no risk of conflict there.
