LOCAL & NATIONAL TV MISHAPS ON LIVE TV

What are some funny things you have seen ::) on live TV over the years? Is there a link on
YouTube of it?

I'll start with this one: WYEA TV 38 in Columbus, Georgia (now WLTZ) had an afternoon movie
and they decided to have a drawing each day for a money prize during a break. They had this
big round wire wheel drum that sat on a stand and they would spin it round and round and pick
a winner out of it.

One day they spun the wheel way too hard and it flew off the stand and across the set!!! All the
lady could do was laugh, laugh, laugh.

I didn't see this live but it was on Dick Clark's bloopers show. It's not on YouTube though.
Now what have you seen ;D

Those were pretty good.

In the first one a bug goes in the reporter's mouth.
I don't think that was live. Looks like they were recording that.

In the second one a lizard jumps on the anchor man. Now, that was live.

This is more of a prank than a mishap. (I never actually saw it, but I remember my dad telling me about it.) It happened on Channel 33 in Fort Wayne, way back when TV stations did live commercials. The weather guy, Bill Foster, was doing a commercial for one of the local Chevy dealers, and climbed into a Chevy pickup and closed the door to demonstrate how quiet the cab was. Only problem was, someone removed the door handles and locks from the inside, so he was stuck there for the rest of the commercial.

How about what happened on FOX 11 Los Angeles when that
lady fell out of a barrel and onto the ground while she was
stomping Grapes with her bare feet?

In the Quad Cities, the local mishaps usually happen on KWQC-TV. One time, an anchor mispronounced a reporter's name, accidentally saying a fowl word by mistake. And I also remember another reporter magically disappearing and reappearing on screen!

However, the most recent mishaps were on The Fox 18 News, which production was just taken over by WQAD-TV. These include technical difficulties and a co-anchor mistakenly referring to KLJB as "Fox 19"....

I remember a scene from an old talk show, shown on one of the "bloopers" shows, in which a woman guest was asked to stand on her head. I forgot why, but she did! Only problem was, she did not know ahead of time that she would be doing that, and was not wearing any underwear! About all I remember from this is that it was very old footage, and was in black and white.

We Have A Winner!!! The studio hosts' reactions were almost as funny as the grape malfunction itself!

That's Fox 5 in Atlanta, though - when I first got the video sent to me (pre-YouTube), I geeked out and called the station to see whatever happened to the lady. She was fine, just had the wind knocked out of her.

There's the WJW/8 "Fox 8" Cleveland reporter who got attacked to her face by a cat.

That's in one of the YouTube collections, though I don't know if it's in one that is linked here.

Do network miscues count? Last year, someone brought up NBC on February 27, 1978 showing part 3 of the miniseries "Loose Change", when they were supposed to show part 2. After 17 minutes, announcer Howard Reig apologised for showing the wrong part, and the network proceeded to show part 2 in its entirety.

Someone here also mentioned that it also happened with another NBC series around this time, "Holocaust".

I think the worst was when the two helicopters collided in Phoenix. KNXV was in the middle of a live report. 'Nuff said.

Speaking of Cleveland - longtime WKYC/3 reporter Del Donahoo once was attacked by a lion while attempting lion-taming moves as part of a human-interest piece filmed at a local mall - the incident was cited in the 1980 edition of Ron Powers' book The Newscasters: The News Business As Show Business (albeit with Mr. Donahoo's surname misspelled "Donahue," as in Phil), and he mentioned that some stations actually reported that attack as a "news event."

I keep thinking of the time Art James was doing a live
commercial for Peter Pan peanut butter on "Say When!"
and nearly cut one of his hands apart opening the jar.

And a rather minor one involving a major personality:
Johnny Carson, doing a live Jello commercial on "Who
Do You Trust?", referred to a "cup" as a "crup". Naturally,
he was able to ad-lib around it: "you can add a crup, too."

I'm sure there are hundreds of examples from the live commercial era. For example, Ed Mc Mahon used to do live Alpo dog food commercials on the Tonight Show in which he'd serve a bowl of the stuff to a live dog on camera. I seem to recall at least one clip in which the dog showed absolutey no interest in the food, running around the set, jumping on Carson and the guests, and so forth.

Don't think it was Ed, but I recall someone doing a live dog food commercial in which the pooch, who had been starved for a day or two to insure a ravenous appetite come commercial-time, gobbled the contents of the bowl in seconds, paused, and promptly regurgitated the slop.
