Actually, it was quite recently that they dropped "Eyewitness News" - it was concurrent with the change from CBS 5 to KPIX 5. They were the last in the Bay Area - by probably a decade - to have an "old fashioned" flashy sounding news brand. Everbody else has been just "___News" for years.i haven't paid much attention to channel 5 in recent years,so I was surprised to learn that they dropped their longtime 'Eyewitness News' branding some years ago.
KPIX dropped "Eyewitness" for "KPIX 5 News" for a time in the 90s, when they experimented with 7-10 PM early prime time, and we're trying to cross promote KPIX-FM. Both of those efforts were debacles. After awhile, they switched back to the "Eyewitness" brand.
