Local News in E. WA is in a sad state

Tonight the little 'pre-recorded' 11PM segment on KIMA showed a female blonde anchor next to Scott Stovall. Sounded like 'Elisha' or 'Elise'. But the idiots didn't put a name up on the screen like they should have, and this woman's bio is NOT on the KEPR website yet. They are starting to put stock photos on the TV monitors, so that's nice. I have seen some stations where they used the TV monitors to display a video of a story and words/graphics to go along with it, maybe they will get better as time goes on.
Last night watching KNDU I saw some long promo with Rob Jesselson answering the phone and cheers coming out of the newsroom, but alas I had it muted darn it! Maybe he's leaving too?

The new KEPR co-anchor is Eliana Sheriff, from KDRV, the ABC affiliate in Medford, Oregon. Previously she worked in Rapid City, North Dakota. Originally from Los Angeles.

KNDU was doing a telethon during their news that day. Hence, the "answering calls" and "cheers coming out of the newsroom".

She worked for KOTA/KEVN in Rapid City. She'll get used to Tri-Cities pretty quickly - the scenery is a lot different here than it is down in Medford however! But the temperatures are just as hot in the summer. Now if KIMA can do the same thing here...

Jesselson is indeed moving to Spokane. No word on where, but an educated guess would be KHQ within the company. Why KNDU has made a promo out of someone leaving is beyond me. ??? Perhaps they have nothing else to promote other than they are losing a sports anchor? Wow.

I laughed at the clown shoes the first couple times, but the last 17 times I've seen the Rob Jesselson promo, I just mute it. Talk about annoying!

I don't understand this promo. It has run hundreds of times, and I'm not sure why. You are losing a sports anchor and they celebrate it?

Don't get that thinking.

Perhaps they are stealing a competitor? That is the only likely result that makes any sense. Who ever is running KNDU is likely either brilliant or out to lunch.

Well, the transition is happening - some young guy is now doing sports on KNDU weekends instead of Kelly Hinseth.

Just some questions here...Mike Gonzales was announced as moving to weekend anchor in Phoenix in early June. He was still anchoring on KAPP/KVEW as of last week. He is still on the website as "anchor", and his restaurant show aired on the stations tonight. Hmm. Has he decided to stay here in the Yak/Tri market, or is there just a delay in his departure? Curious minds want to know.

Wondering when KNDO moved out of 24th street? Drove by it recently and it brought back some interesting memories, but sad to see the facility has nothing to do with TV. Is there even an operations center of any kind? Thought I found a sales office downtown....but that's it.

I believe they moved out around 2008 or 2009. The 'sales office' is downtown on Yakima Ave near 2nd Ave. They have one report (Briseida Holguin) based out of that tiny office and she does a mix of live/prerecorded reports for KNDU-TV. KIMA is the only station that has a news studio, but even then, more than half of their weekly newscasts come from KEPR (all AM news, 11pm newscasts and weekend newscasts).
And to think that 20 years ago EVERYTHING was based here...even KYVE had lots of local programming.

Welll.....Tracci's been doing NBC Right Now news all alone. Glenn has been MIA for quite a while now - and now I checked their website and his bio is gone! But Rob Jesselson is still there? Saw him the other night.
Wonder where Glenn went, whether he was terminated or transferred. He sure was a good anchor. They also hired another new young woman at the Yakima 'sales office' bureau to do reporting, I cannot remember her name.
Operations/master control for KNDO is based at KHQ now.

Rob is gone as of yesterday - I can't remember his last name, but there's a new guy named Cooper who's now the sports director. Mentioned yesterday he used to work in North Dakota doing play-by-play. And the new Austin guy is doing weekends. Looks like KNDU cleaned house - Rob left for Spokane, and they let Glenn AND Kelly go. Wishing all the best.

My best bet is severe budget cuts. If that is the case, then the title of this thread continues to work today!

Could Glenn end up over at KAPP/KVEW? Just speculation...

What's this about KCYU? The other night I watched Fox First at Ten and I found out the sports segment was *pre-recorded*! Cooper Perkins previewed the Mariners game that aired that evening at 7:05, and mentioned 'tonight, the Mariners will play Oakland for their second game' or something like that. What a disservice to those who have to get up early and don't know the scores from the Dust Devils or Mariners games. Your news an hour early should be LIVE, not taped!!
Also, CW9's '10pm' newscast is still prerecorded, and I think it's a replay of KEPR's 5:00 news (without the KEPR Action News bug on the lower right). There's a lot of people who wake up at 5 or 6am to go to work here, not just Hanford workers. On the coast, KONG and KCPQ have never pretaped their 10PM news, and never will.
Not to mention KCYU still outsources to KAYU for their 'good day' show. So much to ask to have Morgan and Monty work another 2 hours in the AM?

These type of issues seem "par for the course" here in Eastern Washington. As for "Good Day" out of Spokane shown in Tri-Cities/Yakima, I don't know. They do try to throw in some Yak/Tri references every now and then, but it is obvious this is a Spokane show. Morgan and Monty could continue on KFFX/KCYU, agreed. However, a local Fox morning show in a market this size is not very common.

I see KNDU's still having Tracci Dial doing solo. Guess they aren't *that* interested in having another co-anchor to replace Glenn Cassie? Maybe we'll see something new this fall.
Jaclyn Selesky's bio is no longer on the KNDU webpage. She was a reporter and occasional fill-in anchor for the last couple of years. They have replaced her with another young female reporter, but I couldn't catch her name. Brittany I think?

I think it kind of depends on how these stations are viewed from the corporate office. Cowles controls KNDU/KNDO, and they will make the decision if it is worth paying a co-anchor in the market. Same with KAPP/KVEW, (Morgan Murphy Media, also owner of KXLY Spokane). Sinclair with KEPR/KIMA, the only station left in the market with separate Yakima/Tri newscasts.

Today, I thought I saw it all on Yakima TV, but now I've watched KNDO embarrass themselves. Ellen is running with NO AUDIO. No audio on commercials (local or national) or the show. If we can't hear the 5:00 news, I will be calling over to either KNDU or KHQ to try and get this resolved. Ridiculous, I don't care if it's a holiday, someone should be watching the damn store. Apparently it's been out since the NBC golf coverage ended a couple hours ago.

And this evening, KEPR has taken the day off, and KIMA is airing in both markets. And it isn't just TV. Today, KONA-AM was running double audio during most commercial sets. Nobody is monitoring, and nobody cares, apparently. Again, can I refer to my title of this thread? "Sad State".
