Local News in E. WA is in a sad state

Where we have local ownership is with the increasingly more successful gay radio company that has bought several AMs with nice translators and will soon cover the entire valley. They can obviously thrive with the many LGBTQ owned businesses and the tourist economy.
Neglected to comment about KGAY. Jackson and Keith talk about KGAY in one of their Vimeo video's about what's new in media:
Otherwise, it's a terrible radio market. TV, though, does very well due to extreme consolidation and out-of-market ownership.
It really is a terrible radio market. Always has been. For one thing, it's saturated with radio all duking it out for a shrinking piece of advertising pie. KGAY however, appears to be well run and developed a loyal fan base.

But don’t forget Yakima is the Palm Springs of Washington. Don’t know if that I-82 freeway sign still stands. Always good for a quick chuckle driving by.
As of July, it's still there. Got a chuckle outta me.

I'll buy the Yakima-Fresno comparison.

KIMA has been simulcasting 5/6PM news on KEPR for the past week or so and 11PM originates from Yakima. I'm guessing Scott Stovall and the KEPR sports guy got an extended Christmas vacation? We'll see what happens come January.

Was VERY surprised to hear a Fox News Radio newscast the other day with none other than Kevin Uretsky! Ex-KVEW/KNDU! Hey, good for him!

Also...is this happening down there on KVEW? Some of KAPP-TV's local ads are often 2-3x LOUDER than national ads. Legends Casino for example. National spots go to local black on Rachael Ray or Jennifer Hudson, and BOOM...local spots are so loud we have to mute them. I thought a law was passed years ago in Congress to ban loud commercials.
Surprisingly, the constant "ba-ba-ba-ba-Bulbhead!" commercials are at normal volume. What gives?

I frequently bash on Yakima, because there are a lot of similarities between it and Fresno: Much like Fresno, Yakima was a teaming agricultural community geographically in the shadow of a much larger metropolitan area. Most of the residents were established family owned farms, who "hire/hired" migrant workers on a regular basis. Just like Fresno; the gangs and drug dealers from the large metro started infiltrating the agricultural migrant worker population, recruiting youth into gangs or selling drugs to local schools. Just like Fresno, illegal drug abuse, illegal weapons, and crime rose significantly over a ten year span. The local Sheriffs department just wasn't equipped to handle the influx of gang influence, and the local retail and service economy struggled because of it. Then along came the 2008 Recession. Several farmers sold out and left the area because they were concerned about the ability to continue getting reliable labor during harvest season. Established local businesses closed down, either because of the increase in crime, and because the big box stores started squeezing them out. What's left is a somewhat stagnant Ag community with little hope for growth, and too many gang influences lying under the surface.
Kelly's right. It used to be a friendly community leaning towards agriculture. Apples, hops, grapes, and we still have thousands of acres of fruit/hop fields, some vegetables/alfalfa too. But in the '80s, that all changed. It became known as a cocaine mecca. Drugs poured into the valley like free scratch-off tickets, and it got so bad that CBS sent 60 Minutes to Yakima to put the town on the national map for a bad reason. That was 1988 (If I recall?) The inner-city streets, like Naches Ave, 6th St, MLK Blvd, etc. and ESPECIALLY 1st Street, became dangerous and crime-ridden. Over the years the poverty has grown and the gangs keep coming. West Valley is supposedly a "safe" area, and yet I've seen graffiti in the 64th/72nd Ave area in the past few years. Homicides have also occurred out here.

Meanwhile, Naches and Selah are very nice small towns, yet so close to the bad influences of Yakima and the Lower Valley towns.

Deadly shooting at a Circle K in Yakima with 3 dead and many schools on lockdown this morning.

KIMA actually broke into programming for once with Jake Taylor at the anchor desk! 👏👏👏 And so did 23 and 35. I bet they got enough complaints for not 'taking action for you' like in their promos, that they realized Y&R was worth preempting, albeit briefly. The press conference was also carried live from YPD/YCSO.

Sad to see more crime in this town, but it's just another normal thing.

This leaves me wondering why and how deaths are covered by media. Three dead in Yakima barely noticed. Four dead in Moscow, ID get national attention. Yes, I understand one was routine and one wasn’t. Does the loss of life make any difference?

College campus in relatively safe Idaho town vs. convenience store in rough part of an even-rougher town for crime and homicides. Believe me - if it was a mass school shooting and that shooter killed at least the same number of students, it would be the top story on NATIONAL news.
In fact, the CBS evening news did cover that Yakima shooting...but only for 30 seconds or so. It was a very busy news night when it happened - fall out over the Chinese dance parlor shooting in Los Angeles, for example, plus developments on the war in Ukraine.
Not to mention the 'numbing' of the public after so many mass shootings over the years. Columbine was a huge story when it broke out. There were special reports on TV for hours, primetime shows were preempted for 48 Hours/Dateline specials, etc. Now it's a weekly to bi-weekly occurrence.
I know there were people freaking out in the *Seattle* area over what happened in Yakima - like, can they even find Yakima on a map of Washington? The dry desert, brown-colored hills and hop fields give it away - it's NOT on the west side of the Cascades...

"If it bleeds, it leads" still applies today. Especially if it involves certain races, the LGBTQ community, police brutality, etc. That's what sells in today's news world. Often, TV news (especially cable) is there to cause you to react negatively, not to inform you like it was in the good ole' days of Uncle Walter and Huntley/Brinkley.

I agree. News today has to have an unusual twist or turn. A simple traffic accident or even domestic murder doesn’t rank up. News today needs to be interesting and/or shocking. But that is what really has always driven the news industry. Just more so today.

Or completely made up sh*t and conspiracy theories. Both of those seem to sell.

Congrats Tracci Dial! Some big shoes to fill at KND...oh wait, we're supposed to call it NonStop Local TriCities nowadays. The 11pm female anchor the other night was so cut and dry, with no cadence whatsoever, it was embarrassing.

Noted the KIMA gated parking lot today (on the west side of the building) was razed, with two bulldozers parked there. Previously had some fifteen parking spots. Is this a sign that Sinclair may be "National Desk-ing" KIMA?
The FRIDAY newscasts lately have been a full simulcast for both markets ("KIMA/KEPR Action News") originating from Yakima, oddly enough.

More likely preparation for digging-up a leaky water main under the parking lot.

Well, Yakima has an ever-increasing number of gangland-related shootings and crime. If only there were enough local businesses left to support TV news coverage....

Yes, more likely to see a barter Rybelsus commercial than an ad for a grocery store or furniture store nowadays.

Albeit, I'm seeing an increase of crime in the Tri-Cities as well. There's been plenty of shootings in Pasco the past several months, and Kennewick too.

Doesn't surprise me one bit. Similar to what happened to communities around Fresno, and the spread to Visalia, Clovis, Madera, and even Bakersfield.

I live in Richland, which has the least crime in the Tri-Cities. That said, I do see more incidents these days. A combination of the post pandemic and rising inflation I would say. The populace is angry, not only here, but across the US.

Richland/Tri-Cities is a pretty Red 'conservative' place-politically anyway. Can imagine how you probably hear a lot of that kind of complaining.

Is a TV station allowed to interrupt a national special report for their regularly-scheduled local news?
KVEW was taking the ABC News Special Report on Trump's new charges. Suddenly, KVEW's news started at 4:59 and interrupted the network.
Would this get them in big do-do with the ABC network?

Meanwhile, Stacy Lee (formerly on KNDU) has moved to KVEW as chief meteorologist. I haven't seen Jason Valentine on set for a while, I'm not sure if he left or not.
KIMA 29's news tonight was a combined newscast with KEPR *and* KLEW. Scott Stovall at the anchor desk originating from KEPR. I'm getting mixed news from KLEW 3's Facebook page...some viewers are saying "we'll miss you Keith (Havens)" and rumors that KLEW shut down the news department altogether, others say that KLEW news will be back on June 19th.
I'll have to check the newscasts over the next few days and see if Jake and Alan return.
