Local News on the Web

It's been a year of change for station websites...total makeovers for many...what does everything think of the sites as they stand today (outside of azcentral)?

Rumor has it that azcentral.com and 12news.com are going to get a radical makeover within the next few months. The Republic is supposedly going to put a major emphasis on the website (at the expense of the printed newspaper).

totally bias review

1. FOX 10 - http://www.myfoxphoenix.com
-considering they didn't have much of a website up until last summer, things look promising for the future. Flash platform for video a big plus+++

2. KPHO 5 - http://www.kpho.com
-nothing outstanding about it, other than layout is nice

3. KPNX 12 - http://www.azcentral.com/12news/
-if I have to go thru AZCentral to get to your site....no thanks. Aside from that, their video quality is excellent(HD?)...and news partnership might be bonus for some viewers.

4. KNXV 15 - http://www.knxv.com/
-I've never been a big fan of their site...even less of a fan of their new on-set backdrop!!!

KFYI puts the burden of their website on newsroom staff...where KTAR has specific web folk who maintain their site. That would give them a slight edge!

KPHO also has a discussion forum with their website. There has been little to no activity on the forum as the last post was August 6, 2006.

KTVK 3 http://www.azfamily.com was recently redone by Belo (all the Belo sites were changed) and has a very active discussion forum (though lately, the forum has been hit by spam links to adult sites and they have had to disable some features). News content on the main website is fair as well as plenty of links to segments shown on all of the news shows.

I'm not a big fan of the new AZFamily.com...it looks cluttered a lot...in my opinion...

I kind of like the ABC15 site...it's a lot easier on the eyes...and there's a lot of color to it

but maybe the better judge is who has the most local content? most updated news?

Last month I started a thread about the speed that these websites added breaking news, and commented a bit about their website content. I think constant updating and rapid posting of breaking news -- local or otherwise, is very important. At least on that particular day, all of the websites except 15's did a good job. They were by far the slowest.

Regarding appearance and content, I still think Fox 10's is now the best and most visually interesting...with 5 and 12 running next. I'm not a big fan of 3's, although I think it's better than it used to be. 15's website to me is tired looking and some items stay on there for months and months. It is interesting that 15 took off the pics of their anchors from their home page a couple of months ago.

KNXV in last place? Can ABC15 catch a break? Possible new slogan: Last in Everything!

Well...it does take a certain talent to be last in everything. Just imagine how bad 15's newscasts would fare without Jeopardy and Wheel in the evenings and the second highest rated network prime lead-ins at night? What if they were an NBC affiliate or an indy like 3? Yikes! They'd go down from 10 viewers to 2 in a flash.

"Tired of Being on Top? Make the Switch to Last!"

It's interesting that Phoenix has 5 full-service, totally separate news organizations. The plight of ABC-15 shows that this is not a sustainable model. In Seattle, a similar-sized market, there are three full-service, news organizations, one Fox affliate that does am's and an early latenight newscast, and one regional cable news network (run by one the full-service news organizations but has their own on-air staff).

No Spanish Language Sites?

I'm not sure how the "random" survey you provided the link for could be representative of metropolitan Phoenix website viewers if there are no Spanish-language sites even mentioned?

Hispanics make up approximately 40% of the population! We know many of the local population like to get their info and news in Spanish -- evidenced by the success of Univision. TV Nielsen numbers show 33 is consistently in the top 2 or 3 stations at almost every time slot and demo, and the Spanish radio stations have been even more successful.

I believe many of these Spanish stations have their own websites. Where are they? Did I miss something?
