Local News/Talk??

Ok, the last few weeks or months we have seen lots of stories that were very significant for Atlanta and the metro area - a hotly contested Atlanta mayoral race complete with runoff and recount, Speaker of the House (2nd most powerful in state govt) embroiled in a suicidal sex scandal forced to resign, HUGE state budget crisis, unimaginable floods in the midst of continued threats and legal challenges to the area’s water supply, federal and state issues surrounding gridlock traffic and transportation, etc etc.

What do we get every night from the WSB local talk show host?

Heelth care refoam, Heelth care refoam, Heelth care refoam, Heelth care refoam, Obama–bama-bama-bama.

Hummin Cain is a novelty cookie cutter copy of national talk shows that we can hear all day, and on every piss-ant station with wall to wall national syndication.

Way to go WSB (not)!!

While I like Herman and think he's a nice guy, I have to agree. I'm tired of hearing the same topics discussed over and over every night.

Even though Chris Krock may have been annoying to listen to, at least he discussed the local issues. What I would like to see is Mark Arum get his own local talk show on WSB. I've always enjoyed listening to him discuss local issues.

I guess it's been decided local talk doesn't work. GST has left the city and has no remaining attachment to it or identity with it whatsoever. WSB, with no competition, fields all syndicated shows that happen to be based in Atlanta, and use their one local slot to develop another potential syndicated show (which I'm assuming they have planned for Herman).

The only thing that counts as local talk now is when Boortz tells us where he rode his motorcycle over the weekend.

I think Denny is doing a really good job on WGKA. But yes, the nighttime signal is quite limited.

WSB went through a slew of local-issues talk shows in the evening before putting on Michael Savage (who of course is now on later). There were Alf Nuciforo and Mitch Skandelakis (probably both spelled wrong).

It amazes me that Atlanta, despite the powerful WSB is missing someone who talks on the local issues of a major metro area as well as the state of Georgia. Then again it sounds like Herman Cain is a typical wannabe. I don't understand why WSB airs a delayed Hannity from 4-7 when the could have someone LOCAL in that part. Sure Hannity use to be on in Atlanta but he's probably pushed those memories out from him.

Why? Let me count the ways:
1) He is cheaper than any talent with staff. WSB probably pays $75,000 to run Hannity's show. A top talent, with two producers and an engineer would cost about $200,000.
2) He's in the top 5 in his demo (25-54 males and 18-93 right wing nut jobs, sorry, had to.)
3) He is a real national political presence, unlike Boortz. Boortz is on the air in four of the top 15 markets. In addition, Hannity has a little talk show on Fox that just beat O'Reilly (wasn't that the name of the incompetent builder on "Fawlty Towers"?) in cable ratings.
4) If WSB doesn't run Hannity then WGST would. Who am I kidding, 'GST wouldn't be smart enough to think of that, even if Hannity is syndicated by Clear Channel.
5) Hannity does make limited appearances in Atlanta. You have to give him props for that.
6) They could air him live but that would mean taking an hour from Clark Howard. WSB markets Howard as being "local" even though he tapes his show in advance and is syndicated.

WSB NEEDS TO BE A 24 HOUR NEWS station like WBBM, GST will always be a mess, which is very sad...WSB has really gone down hill in the last 10 years as well.

I would love a 24/7 All-News station, free of talk and opinion, modeled on template of the great 1010/WINS in New York.

Of course, it ain't gonna happen, which is why I stream WINS on my computer.

WSB can take a hike.

I have listened to 1010/WINS, Newsradio 880/WCBS, Newsradio 780/WBBM and WTOP/Washington, DC. I like the fast pace of 1010/WINS but my favorite is WTOP. The format they use lets you get to know the anchors and is not as repetative as the other stations mentioned. WTOP has a long list of contributors which adds variety.

I thought WTOP was doomed when the left their booming 50kw AM signal and moved to two FM signals (they now have three FM signals). I was wrong. WTOP is now a solid #1 in the DC market.

The only other top 10 market besides Atlanta that does not have a news station is Houston.

Just a wild thought. Why doesn’t CBS “WBBM, WINS, and WCBS” do all news on 92.9?

I'm being too lazy to check, but isn't Houston the only top market with fewer class A clear channel stations than ATL? If ATL had a second class A clear then the AM/news/talk/sports landscape in ATL would be radically different. WSB would have to learn to compete.

If memory serves, WGST was originally offered clear channel status (this was way back when), but Georgia Tech turned it down. The feeling of the day was that 5,000 watts covered more than enough geography for their core listening audience, and they wouldn't have the expense of running a more powerful transmitter.

CBS is definately the king of doing all news radio in the USA. I would love to see them do something in Atlanta, however I am not sure the cluster is big enough to make it worth while.

I keep hearing rumors of a trade that would get them a few more signals in town. Either they add more stations to the cluster, or they leave. One or the other.

The irony is that with just 5 "K" GST had much greater coverage and signal quality at 920 than it does now at 640 with reputedly a lot more power that goes mostly nowhere.

There is not enough news in Atlanta to support one.

There is, there's just no one looking for it or reporting it. Journalism is dead. Atlanta corruption and wholesale lack of leadership alone would give you material to fill 48% of your broadcast day.

It's a darn shame that WSB isn't all news and overnight talk. With a signal like they have it should be offer more live and less syndicated/best of's. Growing up listening to WBZ it was just awesome with the 24 full service, then a move to All news with some talk turned out to be a good balance.

Cmon WSB, get rid of one hip hop signal and do all news on an FM. It rocks in DC.
