Local Performers on Local Newscasts

How often does it happen, if ever, that a local musician who is trying to make it big has an interview and performance on a local newscast? Raleigh NC native Katelyn Clampett is doing a live performance on WRAL during the noon Newscast this Wednesday. I recently called WRAL, and they knew nothing about it. I asked if they ever do anything like that, and they do, but it's very rare. Have any of you heard of this kind of thing happening?

I live in San Francisco - it would be odd to see local musicians perform on a noon newscast which is normally straight news, but very common to see musician perform on one of local morning shows that mix news with features. Five major stations in the Bay Area market have these shows now, they're all on for at least 2 hours, so there is a lot of air-time to fill around the weather and traffic.

There's also a one-hour local afternoon show on ABC-7 ("View from the Bay"), and "Eye on the Bay" in the evening on CBS5. Both shows have a lot of local content, including musicians.

Well, it would appear that WRAL has an hour-long noon newscast. It actually looks like they have a half-hour of straight news at noon, but then they have something called the 12:30 report. I wonder if THAT'S what she meant. That might seem more likely.

WISH-TV and WXIN in Indianapolis have bands on during their morning news shows sometimes. Its not every day, or even once a week. Especially seems to happen on Holidays (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day)

This program that is being talked about sounds similar to what WXIA/Atlanta did in the 80's and 90's called "Noonday" - half news and half morning-show type program.

Mostly, these are confined to local morning shows, which are officially news products despite the entertainment content (like the national shows). These shows try to book nationally-known guests, but always tend to book guests that might have won a contest or are performing at a big local event.

Also, some of these stations use their 12:30 shows for "pay for play"...where a portion of the show is reserved for paying for interview segements, and the other portion is just booked (WXIA's Atlanta and Company, which airs before the noon news, is one of these shows. It is hosted by former radio personalities, and has nothing to do with the news division). If the hosts are entirely different for this 12:30 show then from the noon news...it probably is.

Apparently, the interviewer for Katelyn, Bill Leslie, has actually done albums of his own. I'm sure you would be familiar with that name if you were from the Raleigh-Durham area.

Actually, in Phoenix, news personalities also host the "pay for play" shows in many cases. In fact, Good Morning Arizona has a mixture of news and "pay for play". It really has very little to do with the "news" division. The personalities can do both.
