LOCAL PROGRAMMING NEARLY GONE AT ANOTHER SAC FM

I turned on 103.9 The Fish today and apparently Salem decided to save some dough. Gone is the Morning Show Host Gina Miles. PD Max Miller is now the AM host and the rest of the day is syndicated programming. They are using song tags for the first time and it all sounds pretty sterile. After achieving their all time best Arbitron numbers recently (top 10 25-54), they blew up what they are doing. Smart move Salem.

I wonder how many of these bird feeders have squirrel baffles.

Gina is a class act and a wonderful person. I hope she lands someplace soon!

Gina is a real talent, and from what I could tell (not being a christian music/lifestyle aficianado) had a real bond with her audience. You can't buy that, it either happens or it doesn't. And IMO, even from a business standpoint, it makes no sense to throw that away.

The Lord moves in mysterious ways; He moves His own along in His own way and in His own time, and always to something better and more suited to His own flock. Radio isn't big enough or good enough for somebody such as the lady you describe. She is definitely not the one on the losing end of that deal.

Glad it's not another Clear Channel owned station.

Other radio companies take their cues from the largest operators, doesn't matter that they're emulating a company that's ruining radio, they're all lemmings...

Just Wait: Judgement day for radio is coming! Contrary to published reports things aren't getting better for radio they are getting worse..and will continue to get even worse. Business in general in not getting better
either. I'm getting less money every week because the workload is getting lighter and lighter. There are no new ad dollars coming in from anywhere. Turn out the lights the parties over. We're all doomed! When the first radio company falls the rest will follow right behind them. Get ready for the soup lines.

I happened to tune in The Fish today for a few minutes, and they were running some strange sounding artist intros/outros and some generic liners. It didn't sound all that good to me, though it appears this is the trend. I'm running a Christian Internet Station out of the Sacramento area, and I'm accomplishing much the same with my own automation, obviously without the overhead.

I feel for those losing their jobs due to cost cutting like this. Terrestrial radio loses its personal touch with the listeners when it goes to automation. Having that personal touch with listeners is one of the neat things about radio. After multiple years spent in the country music format, I actually left my radio job after seeing where it was trending. The Internet station I operate is basically a hobby because I couldn't leave radio entirely. I hope the powers that be soon realize that the personal touch is what will bring more listeners to radio. Maybe we need more independent station owners instead of all these huge conglomerates. Harder to be controlled by the corporate office that way.

Spot on Nitnitr! The whole basis of faith is "relational" and now here's a radio station trumpeting the faith and having essentially no relationship with their listeners. When your air talent is in Tennessee, how can they relate to their audience in California? I don't think it's possible. I can't believe what a stupid move this is.

Riiiiiiight. Profits are still double digits, albeit down from a percentage standpoint. There is still no one more pessimistic or bitter about radio than someone who would give their right arm to get back into it.

Or will the economy just keep getting worse until we're all living in caves like Cro Magnons?

I'm sorry, this is a Fish thread.

Until we're all thrown out of Paradise by a deity upset about apple theft?

Don't knock it. Do you have any idea how much trouble one can get into for ripping off the boarding school pantry of an apple to treat the horse in the meadow? Either way, it wasn't about the apple it was about violating the commandment. One way resulted in eventual death, and one way resulted in getting my butt spanked. It wasn't perty in either event.
