WGY usually does an adequate job of reporting during severe weather, but even they fell short last Friday morning thanks to numerous technical glitches.
They were dead air for upwards of 45 minutes after the front went thru. Ironic since the FM's and WOFX were seemingly unaffected. Then when they did get back to actual broadcasting, the audio was in and out for the next couple of hours, from what sounded like a misaligned or windwhipped STL antenna. Good thing for all that digital equipment, eh? No telco or analog backup in place at CC, which would have come in very handy at the time.
WGY really should be prioritized when it comes to staying on air during bad weather and having some redundant systems in place to insure that would be a good thing IMO. When it's stormy, I don't care about listening to yet another voicetracked shift on the River...
We had lost power as well Friday, but not being a National Grid customer, our power was restored in only a few hours. WRGB broke normal programming and had more current weather info on, which is what we relied on during the storm.
