local radio news??

If something happens on the weekend, people here in the Southern Tier can only rely on out-of-town stations to provide the info. (unless of course you want to listen to someone read the Binghamton Press to you on that radio??)

A typical example:

Tour boat capsizes on Lake George
Authorities fear as many as 19 are dead
Bolton Landing
A tour boat carrying 47 persons capsized on Lake George late Sunday afternoon killing as many as 19 persons according to the Warren County Sheriff.
The weather on Lake George was clear and calm at the time of the accident leaving officials without an immediate explanation of what caused the boat to flip over.
Helicopters were dispatched by the State Police and other first responders, presumably to assist with evacuating others to hospitals for treatment.

Even national news had this story but our local outlets? Well, let's just say they missed the boat again. ...no pun intended.

Can I sleep now?</P>

Yes, you can go back to sleep!! <G>

I still think local news has pretty much become "reading the newspaper" on the air.

I've not done news on the air, however why are some stations here in Bingo determined to always lead with national stories, immediately after the national net feed news, and not lead with local news? Is it just because there are no true newsreporters that actually collect news anymore?

Did any station cover the "stop" of a hijacked Baltimore car in Vestal last week where the 3 occupants got out of the car and "ran" away from the Police near the Town Square Mall and, as far as I know, are still at large?

>You are absolutely correct with your complaint. But until 2 things change in radio broadcasting, get used to what you have. The first is until you can get station ownership out of the hands of "the big boys" you will always have small and medium market stations being influenced by the bottom line. Large market news stations are even influenced by this requirement but to a different degree. Secondly, even if and when you change the ownership rules, you would have to go back to teaching the "young" broadcasters of today on how to gather news; police scanners, telephone follow-up, actual writing of the news, presenting the listener with the who, what when and how of the story. This is how it was done 40 years ago, but my how things have changed.

TJ,
I can easily understand the control of "the Big Boys" and the "change" in knowledge of the "young" in this industry. It is no different in the news world whether you work in broadcast media or the printed media or the online media.

I am a radio guy by heart and remember the glory days when clear channels were as important to the DX'ers and the locals where the connection to "real time" news. Radio was king, even when TV became the so-called top dog. Radio was instantaneous and meant you didn't have to wait until 6 to 11 p.m. for the TV news.

I could go on, but why? We all know what the problems are.....
