Local radio on the iPhone

Okay, since AT&T and Apple made it cheaper, I broke down and got myself an iPhone. Now the past 2 Sundays I decided to listen to WMJI via the I Heart Radio app and needless to say, I was very disappointed at the quality of the signal. It kept breaking up during AT40 the Seventies. I decided to listen on the regular radio where I got an uninterrupted signal. I find this happening on any station offered by I heart radio. I also listen to out of town non CC stations who have their own apps, such as WIXY 100.3 from Champaign, Illinois. (Cliff Note: Did you not expect me to have that app?) Anyway that app works very well with no interruptions.

Anybody else use the I Heart Radio app? And if you do, do you find the same problems?

Speaking from the land of Android here...IHR has always been a bit flaky.

It improved somewhat with the latest version, 3.0, but it's still not perfect.

What kind of data connection are you using? 3G? EDGE? WiFi?

I'd download TuneIn for a one-stop non-CC streaming audio app.

http://tunein.com/mobile/ios/

It's great. On Android the regular version is free, the "Pro" version is like $2.99. I got it for free via the launch in the Amazon App Store.

I think the basic version is pay on iOS, maybe 99 cents or something.

Thanks OMW, I'll have to check that out. I find that with all the non CC apps pertaining to radio seem to work better than IHR. And most of the time I'm usually at home connected to my wireless router, otherwise it's 3G.

And for what it's worth, I also downloaded the Solid Gospel app, which is from Salem. That works about the same as IHR, and that's not well. The Gospel Station Network works much better.

Local, I have WONE and WQMX and they both work great.

And by the way, there is a free version for IOS.

Hey WIXY....the morning man on WIXY 100.3 is Steve Holestein, whom I worked with at 1060 MCL Mcleansboro Illinois circa 1987. Great guy and on air talent. A few years ago I asked him if he knew the heritage of the calls, he wasn't aware. He is now!

Thanks Jim. I have posted comments on Holstein's blog a couple of times and also have had some people stopping at my blog while searching for WIXY 100.3.

And I have listened to Holstein and Company a couple of times in the past week when I've not been scheduled the early shift at my work. I may call in one day.

I can vouch for the quality of TuneIN..consistent quality sound, great choice of stations..And another nice feature is that you can record on it..I havent used IHeart enough to make a judgment on it..

WHBC-AM has it's own app..It has had issues for awhile but has worked the last few times I've used it.

I listen to stations all over the country, including a few in Cleveland, on iheartradio and TuneIn. Both have their ups & downs, but nothing that's hugely frustrating. Thankful for both!

Like IHR, TuneIn has also improved somewhat (at least in the Android version). The most recent major version upgrade increased stability tenfold...and we finally got recording on the Android version via Pro.

I generally don't bother with station-specific apps unless they're the only way to hear a station. I haven't yet found a streaming station that wasn't in TuneIn (or in IHR for CC stations).

The most recent IHR update for Android opens it up to the full universe of CC streaming stations. It had about 300 before, only stations that had installed Android compatible streaming.

Now, you can stream CC smaller market stations on IHR for Android, like the Lima, Ashland/Mansfield and similar clusters. It's also opened streaming for the CC Akron/Canton stations that weren't on the list before.
