Local Radio

There has been a lot of talk this week at the FCC about local radio. YES, we need to be local.

I heard a lot of great LOCAL radio this week. When the power was out and all people had was a radio, we gave them the information.

Kevin Martin should have been in Tulsa or OKC this week to hear what local radio does in a time of crisis. KFAQ and KRMG were running local information and news. Most of the FM music stations were sounding very local. They were giving information and still playing music.
Sounds like most of the PDs allowed their jocks to open up a bit more.

This was a crazy week for all broadcasters, but this is what we do. No offense to our TV friends, but this was a week for radio to shine. All across the board...nice work. We all came together for Katrina relief and this week we were there for our listeners.

If you get good e-mail from your listeners, make sure that you print them for your public file.

You're right on journal guy. I can't believe there's no more posts on this. We all should feel proud of being as local as we were. It was the best time to shine as local jocks. Myself without power for 9 days depended on the radio. And I heard some good radio.

Another thing I'd like to ask the FCC goons is why does radio get the "you must be local" but TV, with the expection of the stations that run news, are as UN-local as they can get (for the most part). Why are we always the kicking dog of the FCC when it comes to broadcast? Janet Jackson "malfuntions" and we get kicked for "indecency". Now we're getting kicked in the teeth for localism. How quickly they forget about how RADIO.. yes.. crappy old AM RADIO saved the day in NOLA. Radio companies put aside rivalry to do the right thing down there.

How many TV companies have you seen do that?

YES FCC! WE DO PROVIDE A PUBLIC SERVICE!
