Local religious programming in your area

While there are some "religious" broadcasters who are to bona-fide religion what professional wrestling is to sports, in our nation, there's no law against presenting entertainment disguised as religion any more than there is a law against presenting "sports entertainment" like the WWE.

I never thought about it in those terms before, but you're probably right. It should be the responsibility of the station owners (Radio or TV) to be accountable for the quality of the programming they air. Unfortunately too many of them are dollar a holler outfits that don't care who they allow on as long as the airtime is paid for, and a lot of those are stations that claim to be Christian, but their god (little g) is the almighty dollar. That isn't saying that there aren't legitimate preachers or stations out there who are trying to do the right thing, but too many radio and TV stations that claim to be "Christian" are a sham. I don't expect secular stations who run religious programming to have the same standard as a station that is supposedly Christian owned, but the Christian owned station should have a higher standard, but unfortunately some are no better than the secular stations.

Here in the Bible belt, Jackson, Miss., Sunday is big for religious programing. Fox 40 WDBD, along with paid programing, airs the Methodist Hour, In Search Ministries, Let The Bible Speak and Crossgates Baptist Church Service; WLOO MyTV 35 carries Kenneth Copeland, Jack Van Amp Presents and Crossgates Baptist Church Service; Former CW34 WRBJ is now a TBN station and we get 4 subchannels which carry nothing but religion programing; WAPT ABC 16 airs Joel Osteen and Gallaway United Methodist Church service; WJTC CBS 12 airs First Baptist Church and WLBT NBC 3 airs Winninig Walk with Ed Young Sr., First Baptist Church of Brandon and First Presbyterian Church. They are also air early weekday mornings on 35 and 40.

Accountable for quality? Since when has broadcasting ever cared about "quality", let alone was actually accountable for it? I have no intention of getting into a debate over what is or isn't "Christian", beyond noting that the faith tradition I am a part of has been accused of not really being "Christian" by other Christians. I have been told in no uncertain terms that I am not a Christian because my baptism was "wrong", or because I believe in the True Presence in the Holy Eucharist.

I suppose a strong argument could be made that those Christian-owned stations that are operated by Christians who aren't part of the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church can't be expected to truly be "Christian". But though that argument might be strong from the theological perspective, it has no meaning whatsoever in the context of OTA broadcasting of radio or television in the United States of America.

The FCC (or any other branch of the government) has no more right or empowerment to hold broadcasters accountable for the "quality" of religious or secular programming than the lesbian mayor of Houston has any right or empowerment to demand that preachers send her copies of their sermons. That doesn't mean people won't try. Ignoring the Constitution is increasingly popular in the US lately, especially at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. But, with any luck, that is just a temporary situation that will come to and end one way or another.

i remember that WLOS used to have Ralph Sexton,Sr,Robert Schuller, and James Kennedy on sunday mornings for years

In Eugene OR, The 700 Club airs at 11am on Sinclair's KMTR (NBC) and at noon on California-Oregon Broadcasting's KLSR (FOX).

The 700 Club also airs at 6pm on KLSR's sister station, KEVU-CD. BTW, this Sunday both KMTR (9am-Noon) and KEVU (5-8pm) will be airing the 700 Club Super Sunday Telethon which always comes the week before the Super Bowl and takes out an entire day's programming on ABC Family. Which stations are airing it where you live, and will it preempt any sporting events?

i might add that WLOS had Wesley Grant for many years as well in fact when WLOS took him Ralph Sexton Sr and ABC college football off in 1987 there were many complaints

that period September 1987-january 1 1988 was a dark period for the station as they were in third place

Houston TV is replete with religious programming.

KHOU preempts the second half of "Face The Nation" until 3 am Monday morning to accommodate Joel Osteen's Sunday pay for pray-a-thon.
I suspect Gannett will likely stop this practice

JMO though.....

Cheers & 73 :)
