Local sports talk finished on 1250

The Pirates would be willing to listen to an offer from The Fan. They don't think they are getting the kind of support from CC they were promised and are surrounded by programming that does them no good.

That said the bottom line is all that talks on Federal Street.

The Pirates need all the help they can get, on and off the diamond! Moving to The Fan would certainly raise their profile and give them needed marketing support by having their games on an all-sports FM station.

Would the Steelers consider switching to The Fan when their current deal with CC expires? :)

Ask yourself these questions, "Would the Pirates be more likely to sell more tickets to PNC park if they changed stations?" and "Would the Steelers be likely to sell more tickets to Heinz Field if they changed stations?".

Obviously, the Pirates are concerned about selling more tickets. On the other hand, the Steelers have no extra tickets to sell, do they? So the Pirates should be open to considering anything that might help them sell more tickets, while the Steelers don't have much reason to care.

My point is that having your games on an all-sports station is about marketing. On field fortunes aside, the Pirates were hoping a move to an FM talk station would be good for reaching younger demos who never tune in to an AM station. CC didn't give the team the marketing support they were expecting. When the Pirates cut the deal with CC, there was no FM sports station to consider.

The point about the Steelers is are they happy with CC. That's the question! :)

(The point about the Steelers is are they happy with CC. That's the question!)

Anything can happen, but I would expect the Steelers will go with whatever station gives them the most money.

As for the Pirates, the situation is a little different. While they do value the money, they do need to market the team. For that reason, 104.7 is probably the worst station in the market to have their games on. 93.7 seems an obvious choice, but ultimately money will talk.

Its not like Clear Channel will lose out by not having the Pirates on 104.7 now. Also who has more rights to sports broadcasting on radio CBS Radio or Clear Channel?

It ain't about happy or sad, it's about business. The response from pman44 is dead-on accurate.

It's all about the money, it's not about being happy.

A little off-topic, but looks like The Fan is finally trending. It has finally cracked a 2-share (2.1 to be exact), while WEAE had a 1.5. Not too bad for The Fan...

Yes, and this ratings period ended before any of the changes at Ardmore Blvd.

The Fan was beating ESPN1250 in almost every daypart, too. Stan 'n' Guy were still winning in their daypart, but not by much.

I heard an ESPN hockey analyst interviewed on The Fan yesterday afternoon.

Wonder how long before John Clayton and Ed Bouchette appear on 93.7?

Heard that and wondered the same thing. I think Bouchette had a contract with 1250, so he may still be bound by that. With true ESPN employees, I don't know if they have to get approval to be on non-ESPN stations or not. They had been prohibited from going on the FAN when 1250 was local, so hopefully that has changed or will change.

Answer: According to Bob Smizik, Ed Bouchette will be on the air with The Fan, starting Monday.
