Local Station Weather Alert During Programming

Noticed that my local NBC station weather alert graphic now has sponsored by with the companies name. Really they need a sponsor to alert the public for a t-storm warning or watch.

Yes they do. A deal like that might pay the salary of one of the weathermen. Without it, you would have cuts made in the news department.
If they can figure out a way to sponsor dead air they will.

But for a t-storm or tornado watch or warning during regular non news programming is ridicules i believe. Now during the newscast its ok near the bottom ticker. The other two CBS and ABC affilate just give the warning or watch. Forget about sponsored by junk just give the weather info.

Or be like The Weather Channel! They think it's of dire importance that the Twitter or Facebook info of the on-air weather person is more important than the hick town being destroyed by a huge tornado. Vivian Brown, Paul Goodloe or Kyla Groagan can be on for, say, three minutes with the maps and what not...with that under then the entire time. Damn you Comcast/NBC-Universal! :(

My preferred weather station is sponsored by a farm supply superstore, which gets their logo on-screen 24/7 on the .2 weather subchannel and a 'presented by' tag when weather is introduced. Frankly I don't mind it at all; better for them to be sponsored and not have to worry about any budget cuts or staff losses because the superstore funds the weather department out of their pocket. Though I should note during weather warnings their logo doesn't appear on screen, but their name is in the scroll as 'presented by' (and does not have their logo on the maps themsevles).

Frankly, what bugs me more is the weather warning tickers that have to have moving clouds, block half the screen out, have maps that block out everything and very loud warning tones every two minutes that make my weather radio sound like a quiet Easter chick in comparison. They would do well to obey the KISS standards.

What grinds my gears is that in my market, there is so little information on the weather crawls. Instead it's "T-Storm Warning for Mayberry County until 6:30. For more, go to our website."

Um....I'm watching TV. Maybe I'm not online.

"This evening's Color Bars and Tone are brought to you by Acme cable Company. For continued programming during the night, call 1-800-GET-CABLETV. Have your credit card ready!"

LOL!

Also, the traffic has to be sponsored, every time, by someone. On KING, McDonald's sponsors the Twitter-tweet-filled-traffic-which-I-dislike, KCPQ's is sponsored by Les Schwab, and KIRO/KOMO have NO traffic or weather sponsors. See? You can do traffic without a sponsor.

Certainly, you can do traffic without a sponsor, but if the right sponsor comes along offering the right amount of money, you'd be a fool to say no.

I don't see the big deal in it. After all, the name of the game is commercial television. Somehow, I can't picture McDonald's interfering much with the traffic reports anyway, unless they demand KING report on mysterious jams and closures around the local Burger King locations, but it's safe travels to each and every McDonald's.

McDonald's, probably to promote and rinse and repeat the McCafe coffee...it is 6AM by the way when the news airs.

I've seen where during the weathercast it opens with a bump saying weather brought to you by XYZ Honda. Cut to weather guy, he does his thing for about a minute or so and then "Ill have the rest of the forecast after this from XYZ Honda. They play 30 second Honda spot and then you get the rest of the forecast!

they also need sponsors to alert the public for school closings

Pemco Insurance sponsors KCPQ's school closings, I don't think 4, 5 or 7 here in Seattle have sponsors.

P.S. The XYZ Honda "commercial" is dumb! Just play the darn forecast, even with the sponsor all over the screen, cut to anchors, say "We'll be right back," and THEN play your XYZ Honda ad.
