Local Tragedy and Media Coverage

With the recent shooting (and now passing) of Fort Worth Police Officer Henry Navara Jr, I have been watching alot of the local news, some stations have shown professional restraint while other has been sensationlized this unfortunate and truly dispicible incident. I wanted to gauge your opinions on a couple of questions:

A)Do you feel the media coverage(TV/Radio/Writen Word/ect..) of this recent tragedy been handled with a level of respect, not only to the family and FWPD, but to the community as a whole?

B)Does the "jailhouse interview" of his accused killer really even deserve to be shown or reported on?

I have my opinions on this issue, but im going to hold off until everyone else has had a chance to respond.

Channel 8 held off airing that interview after the news broke about the death of the officer at 6pm

Ch. 4,5, and 33 subjected it to "tabloid flu" with a sensationalism towards ratings. They didn't care as long as they had "dramtic footage",and "exclusive interviews." Should the interview have been shown? Yes. Why? It's journalism done the objective way, despite one's personal emotions. Ch.8 is commended for not showing it out of respect for the officer's family. Ch.11 showed restraint in reporting the story.

First off, his last name was Nava. And I don't believe he was a "Jr." At least, no news organization that I've seen or read has put that after his name.

Second, in terms of the coverage, I believe only Channel 8 (of those I saw) handled it responsibly and with respect toward the family. 4 and 5 sensationalilzed it, and I didn't see 11's coverage.

Recently there have been three officers slain in the line of duty who had about the same level of coverage: Irving police officer Aubrey Hawkins (shot Dec. 24, 2000), Dallas police officer Brian Jackson (Nov. 15), and Fort Worth officer Nava. I believe the coverage of each, in most cases, varied from the tasteful and respectful to the sensational, and I believe in all cases that I saw, Channel 8 came across as the most respectful.

As to item (B), I did not see the jailhouse interview, so I can't comment on it specifically...however, if I were a news director and I had the opportunity to interview a man accused of murdering a police officer, I would jump at the chance...because it's the "other side of the story," however distasteful that might be to viewers.
______________

My bad...he was a "Jr." Here's the link to his information on the Officer Down website: http://odmp.org/officer.php?oid=18064. I can't make it a working link for some reason, so just cut and paste into your browser.
______________
