Local TV Coverage Of The New York Marathon

At this writing (2:15 P.M. EST Sunday, November 6th), I'm watching NBC's edited broadcast of this morning's New York Marathon.

While NBC has exclusive TV rights to the race outside of the New York area, I would think that the situation for local TV coverage in New York is similar to that of the marathon here in Boston every April: No exclusive TV rights are granted in the city where the race is being held in, meaning anyone who wants to televsie it can do so (which usually means contributing money and/or equipment to a TV camera pool).

Who televised the race live?? And if more than one station broadcast it, whose coverage was the best??

WNBC covered today's ING New York City Marathon with NBC Sports. Coverage started on WNBC at 9AM and ran until 2 PM when the nationally televised NBC Sports highlight show aired. The WNBC broadcast has a NBC Sports look, although all the mic flags are WNBC. It should be noted that WNBC uses NBC Sports graphics for Mike'd Up and for their pre season Giants telecasts.

As for the race itself, the Woman's winner was Jelena Prokopcuka of Latvia and the men's winner was Paul Tergat of Kenya.<P ID="signature">______________

Until a few years ago the marathon was shown on WPIX - WB11. At that time, does anyone know if NBC Sports had a highlight show for it?

Wanna bet?

From the Marathon's website:

In New York: The race will be broadcast live exclusively on WNBC Channel 4 for five hours. Telemundo 47 will have live cut-ins during the race as well as segments leading up to the marathon.

No other NYC stations covered the race live. BTW: Trans World International actually produced the telecast, as they have for some years.

UPDATE: A replay of the WNBC telecast - minus commercials - is running today from 4 pm-8 pm ET (approx.) at WNBC.com's "Feedroom".

IIRC, during the years WPIX carried the marathon, which were 1994 to '98 (I think), ESPN-2 carried it either live or taped. ESPN-2 also used their own graphics and announcers in their coverage.
