Local Weekend Shows

I was in my car this weekend and I happened to catch a lot of those weekend radio shows and I was wondering, those shows that are like "Al Computer Questions Show" or "Handy Man Harry Show" or and those religious programs on KDKA, WPGB, etc. is that air time bought buy the handymans', the computer guys and the churches or are those programs the stations pay to play?

Yep. The financial advisor shows on Saturday mornings were the first, and then the other trades followed.

Depends on the station. Some in the burbs charge $65 for a half hour, while that may be $100 for a half hour in the city...at least. But that's a ballpark figure.

Of course, if you want to buy a block during the weekdays, it's substantially more.

And there are instances, although rare, of people launching careers via pay-for-play. The Monsters on Real Radio 104.1 in Orlando (and I think they can also be heard on XM) started out as a weekend show that bought their own time. Eventually the station noticed they were pretty good and gave them the night show, which grew into middays, and then mornings when Stern went to satellite. (Results not typical, your mileage may vary...)

The best Weekend Shows

I have to say that the Harold's win hands down. I think the man is named Harold on the 7am computer show on 104.7. he is excellent. kind with callers, patient. I think he must have an on air background. also Harold Baley the friendly trapper 8am on 570 am wkbn youngstown. old home friendly. these two guys are jems on radio and part of my weekend listening.

..guess that explains why the 'burgh's #1 radio personality in 2008 appears
to be Dr. James Winer. :D
