Locally Owned Commercial Radio Stations

The closest one is owned by Amaturo Sonoma Media Group Santa Rosa, California. They own radio stations that serve Sonoma County, California. Another one is Wine Down Media owner of KVYN Napa. But that is starting to become rarer for commercial radio stations to be locally owned and operated.

The ones I hear that are locally owned and operated are non profits and affiliations with NPR or various LPFM's.

In the northeast, there's Pamal Broadcasting, which owns stations in the Hudson Valley, Catskills, Albany NY/Capital District, and Adirondack region. You also have Press Communications at the Jersey Shore. Out on the east end of Long Island, you have Bark Out Loud Dogs Media's WLNG. You could also consider Red Apple's WABC radio locally owned and operated. It's not all iHeart and Audacy out there.

Here are more places where local commercial radio is still relevant in places like American Samoa where South Seas Broadcasting owns stations there like 93KHJ. Also Pacific Media Group is the owner of several radio stations in the state of Hawaii.

Guam is another place where some of their radio stations are locally owned and operated as a commercial operation by a group called Glimpses Media. They exist in some places but it’s going to be rarer with time.

Back on the Mainland there’s Anaheim Broadcasting Corp which is the owner of KOLA-FM and KCAL-FM San Bernardino.

Theres Point Broadcasting which is locally owned and operated commercial radio operations in parts of California.

It's all Stephens Media or Townsquare here in Yakima, but nearby KXLE 95.3 is locally owned (by our own Bill Wolfenberger)! And then there's the Jacobs Radio Group in Tri-Cities that owns Tri-Country, 107.3 the Beat, and U-ROCK, along with KDRM and KBSN in Moses Lake.

Here are another set of stations this time locally owned and operated commercial radio stations in Mendocino county, California.

Here is Results Radio this group owns commercial radio stations in Yuba City, Chico and Redding. This is starting to have a pattern similar to the Sacramento thread about live and local radio.

Here is another group that’s locally owned and operated commercial radio it’s Wine Country Radio based in Sonoma County, California. They own stations around Santa Rosa, California. The ones I seen that manage local commercial operations they mainly have advertisers whose operations are within that area and their cluster doesn’t cross state lines. Also they are not traded in the stock market as of this posting.

Just up and down the I-5 corridor in western WA alone, there is one local ownershop group in Mt. Vernon, one in Everett, three different ones in Olympia, one in Centralia, one in Shelton and one in Longview. In or near Seattle proper there would be Akal, Bennett, Crista, Suh, Sea-Mar, Classic (KING) and Iglesia Pentecostal Vispera del Fin. At least- I am probably missing a few

I'm not sure what you mean by "locally owned commercial radio stations." As one of the other posters pointed out above, though Cox and Cumulus are national companies that own many radio stations (Cumulus more than Cox), both companies own radio stations in their home of Atlanta. And, when you disqualified IHeart, it should be pointed out that IHeart (at least when it was known as Clear Channel) was/is based out of San Antonio, TX, and it owns a number of the radio stations in that city.

The rule of thumb nowadays is that the larger the market, the less likely the chance that there will be small one- or two-owned radio stations by small broadcasters in that market.

I was also thinking that Salem Media, KLOVE, Family Radio, Hubbard, Conesseiur media would not count given that they are also nationwide too. But then again in some parts of the country the only locally owned stations are LPFM operations and Public radio stations. We had a similar issue on the TV side about locally owned independent TV stations without network TV affiliations and with similar results given where we are now rare because where we are now.

How many of you in your area have a commercial radio station locally owned & operated? They're stations not owned by iHeartradio, Townsquare, and Audacy.

I do.. i work for them!

KLMI-FM 106.1 Rock River/Laramie, WY was the original standalone. Wide AC/Variety 50kw C2 rimshot to Laramie, helped by an on channel booster

The owner just bought stations from the estate of Stephen Silberberg
IMix 104.5 KIMX Centennial/Laramie. Big 14KW C2 CHR format easily makes it to the east side of Cheyenne 50 plus miles away
KRQU 98.7 Laramie.. classic rock/classic hits.. 110 Watts, makes it about to the western edge of Cheyenne almost 40 miles away
K244FN 96.7 250 Watts, a simulcast of KHAT 1210. 96.7 easily makes it into cheyenne 40-45 miles away

all stream at www.laramieradio.com All locally programmed, but not all have local hosts. KIMX has the TJ show and music the rest of the day. KRQU has no shows or jocks. 96.7/1210 has Big D N Bubba, nothing else.. but I'll be doign middays soon, and katie n company afternoons.

KLMI has John and heidi morning, a voicetracker from CA ion middays and me in afternoons

Owner grew up here, went to HS and college here, never left.. is known all over town. It's his stations and him alone.. he is the sole owner.

We are heavily involved in the community and donate thousands of dollars in airtime every year through daily community interviews, free or discounted ads to non profits (We just donated a few weeks ago.. a boat load of ads for project graduation.... drug and alcohol free HS grad night that had a schedule on all 4 stations pretty heavy)

Los Angeles has several radio stations that are locally owned and operated commercial operations like Meruelo Media the Owner of KDAY, KLOS, KPWR, KDEY and KLLI.

KJLH Los Angeles is owned by Stevie Wonder.

Also Saul Levines Mount Wilson FM Broadcasters owns stations in the Los Angeles area.

Except for a group of stations owned by small-ish Miami based SBS and a non-com owned by K-Love, all stations in Puerto Rico are locally owned. So that is 90% local ownership.

For me, it's one (maybe two) groups.

1. *Union Broadcasting's WHB (810 AM) and KCTE (1510 AM) located in Overland Park, Kansas – and

2. The Carter Broadcast Group's KPRS (103.3 FM) and KPRT (1590 AM)

*Union Broadcasting does own stations in Louisville, Kentucky and FM station in Wichita, Kansas.
