Locally Owned Commercial Radio Stations

WGN Radio was at one time locally owned and operated media in Chicago by Tribune media. But that was prior to Tribune becoming a national recognized media company. Today its Nexstar only owned radio station while they are better known for owning TV stations around the country and their headquarters are in Irving, Texas.

The current locally owned station in Chicago not owned by an NPR affiliate is Heartland Signal the owners of WCPT Chicago.

For me, it's one (maybe two) groups.

1. *Union Broadcasting's WHB (810 AM) and KCTE (1510 AM) located in Overland Park, Kansas – and

2. The Carter Broadcast Group's KPRS (103.3 FM) and KPRT (1590 AM)

*Union Broadcasting does own stations in Louisville, Kentucky and FM station in Wichita, Kansas.
The Reyes Media Group owns KCZZ 1480 AM and KDTD 1340 AM in the KC area and is trying to buy 105.9 KKSW in Lawrence from fellow independent Great Plains Media, and there’s La Mega on 100.5 and 1160 AM (not sure who/what company owns the stations), as well as Alpine Broadcasting’s KCXL in Liberty, MO.

The vast majority of stations in the USA are locally owned. There's over 25,000 stations. A few thousand are owned by the big boys. Most are locally owned. The bulk of stations are in small cities and towns.

In the Raleigh-Durham, NC market, ownership of the commercial radio stations is largely spread amongst four companies. Two are locally held: Curtis Media Group and Capitol Broadcasting Company. iHeart and Urban One are the national operators here. WCHL in Chapel Hill is locally owned as are some stations in small communities on the periphery of the market.

True also some of the locally owned and commercial ones I seen here that may fit with the OP are small chains whose clusters are in some cities or states like Pacific Media is a chain thats only in Hawaii or Murelo Media and Mount Wilson Broadcasting whose radio chain is only in Los Angeles.

Locally in Knoxville, TN: WDVX and translators, WKCS, (High School), WUOT (UT), WUTK (UT), WETR, WMYL/WJBZ, (Ron Meredith), WOZO/WOZW),WJBE, WSEV/WPFT

In Canada most commercial AM/FM broadcast stations are owned by either Bell Media or Rogers. I am pretty sure in my city with only two AM stations and dozens of FM stations they're are owned by either of those two corporations. It's been years since any radio station here was locally owned and operated.

Here in Pittsburgh WRRK/WLJT are locally owned by Steel City Media. WSHH is locally owned by Renda.
WJAS is locally owned by St. Barnabas. Plus some of the smaller stations on the fringes like WJPA in Washington
and the BCI cluster.

KRVR-FM, KSTN-AM, KCVR(AM) are all radio stations that are locally owned in Stockton and Modesto, California.

For Sacramento there are locally owned radio stations but they are mainly non-profit, religious programming or airs programming thats in other languages not English or Spanish. In this case KIID and KPRU airs its programming in Punjabi or in the case of KJAY its Hmong or Russian.

Heres more on locally owned commercial radio station groups. This time in Minnesota theres Radio Mankato and Marshall radio they own radio stations in parts of Minnesota
