Location of old Grand Rapids station

Someone on another board wrote about a radio station near the corner of Lake Michigan Drive and Covell,

Which station and EXACTLY WHERE was the station? Was it where the realty Company now is on the NW corner, or the stanfe looking houses (appear to have been remodeled) on the SE corner?

Where was the tower? Details appreciated. Thanks

That would be WAFT (formerly WMAX.) They moved from that building to the Federal Square Building summer 1969.

AND....it was the building on the NW corner. Transmitter was...and stayed...in the same location - Butterworth dump.
Covell Rd. was a nice facility....but too much $ for the newest owners, Hill-Meadowcroft. Also - way more than they needed. At that time it was automated MOR. My first radio job (sigh.)

Mort,
Curious. Is the building stilll there? That NW corner has a BP gas station, next West is a printer. I live 3 blocks from that site.

Dunno. Haven't been to that corner since 1970. All's I know is....John Seymour....then "chief engineer" was in charge of moving the station to Fed. Sq. Building and MAN-OH-MAN....what a pile of cool shite he was ready to trash - didn't need it at the new location. I got some Most Excellent Stuff. Turntables, a BEAUTIFUL Gray tonearm, AirAlert, brass fire extinguisher, etcEtcETC. Just wished I'd taken that Western Union clock...

Almost as good as when Cumulus cleaned out the KNBR transmitter sight in SF.

Ah well. Next time?

SIDEBAR:

I assisted Seymour in doing a proof - me sitting in the rat-infested xmtr shack - him, back in the studio. First...we do the RCA 5K....then the Bauer 1K standby - which sounded WAY better. Truly...HI-FI. Both passed....according to him - even though most of the copper radials were stolen when the "new" tower was installed.

Later - John Alan was chief...and we (OK...ME) used to sign on "for testing" Mid-3A. Mostly to "adjust the processing" (play Mott The Hoople) until we got a QSL request from freekin' Portland Oregon.

OK. Testing OVER!!

John will deny it. Trust me....It happened.

Also - I used to "call in and win" donuts from the ZZM overnight guy....

AND....Rick Beckett and I would get stoned - and then - he'd call the ZZM night guy and totally trash him. "YOU SUCK!!!"
And we'd listen to the next break...and you could hear the guy losing it. Another call on the request-line....and next break,
he's almost in tears.

Cruel - to be sure....but, ManOhMan....what a great time we had.
